How much is a 140-character message worth when you’re a professional athlete?
Toronto’s top athletes can’t compete with LeBron James’ jaw-dropping estimated asking price of roughly $139,000 (all values U.S.) per tweet, but they can still earn thousands of dollars simply by tweeting, says a social media media marketing company that works with some Blue Jays players.
Data collected by Opendorse, whose clients include Edwin Encarnacion and Kevin Pillar, suggest that a Toronto athlete can expect to make approximately $500 per tweet for each 100,000 followers they have.
“Some of our analytics for determining value are fairly clear,” said Opendorse marketing coordinator Sam Weber. “We measure an athlete’s true reach, activity, and the level of engagement with their audience.
“Does the athlete have a lot of fake or inactive followers? Our computers know that. Are they making an effort to clean up their writing? We know that, too.”
There is a rough correlation between followers and price, but there is no set formula. It all depends on how the athlete uses social media.
Specific details are not available, but it appears that DeMar DeRozan’s deal with Klipsch Audio involves the Raptor tweeting and retweeting messages for the headphone manufacturers.
