60-something actress Helen Mirren's famous bikini photos and 47-year-old model Kristen McMenamy's recent swimsuit shoot in Italian Vogue have raised the bar for bodies mature women aspire to, but how old is too old to wear certain fashion items remains a question of personal esteem. A new survey published in the Daily Mail May 11 now tries to provide an official benchmark.
2,000 women between the ages of 18 and 65 polled by UK dieting company Diet Chef proved to be conservative when it comes to the appropriate age for wearing a mini skirt (35) or tube top (33) but were more generous regarding bikinis (47), giving you till the age of 61 to ditch your swimsuit and stay off the beach altogether.
Everyone but , who is older than 34, should stop wearing leather pants, according to the survey, but for leggings, you'll get another eleven years until they are to be banned forever to the gym.
As for shoes, mark your half-centennial by throwing away your favorite stilettos (hoping you've already done the same with your Uggs at 45 and knee high boots at 47) and opting for more sensible choices - kitten heels, not sneakers, since they're not a good look from the age of 44 - from there on. It's also a good time to chop off your hair, apparently, as long hair and the ponytail are no-nos from your early 50s.
