Keep in mind that for centuries, people had parts of The Bible read to them, and the person reading it told them what it meant. I wonder how many 'pedo-priests read John 17 to an alter boy, after sharing some of the sacrificial wine with him, and showing him some paintings of Jezebel, Delilah, and Mary Magdalene.

I'm sure many a man who thought "God the Father" meant himself used these verses as justification when his wife was withholding sex. I can't possibly be the first 'lay person' to stumble across this passage in the past 2,000 years.

Question: "Why did God allow incest in the Bible?"

Answer: There are numerous examples of incest in the Bible. The most commonly thought-of examples are the sons/daughters of Adam and Eve (Genesis 4), Abraham marrying his half-sister Sarah (Genesis 20:12), Lot and his daughters (Genesis 19), Moses’ father Amram who married his aunt Jochebed (Exodus 6:20), and David’s son Amnon with his half-sister Tamar (2 Samuel 13). It is important to note, however, that in two of the above instances (Tamar and Lot), one of the parties involved was an unwilling participant in the incest—better described as rape in those cases.

It is important to distinguish between incestuous relationships prior to God commanding against them (Leviticus 18:6–18) and incest that occurred after God’s commands had been revealed. Until God commanded against it, it was not incest. It was just marrying a close relative. It is undeniable that God allowed “incest” in the early centuries of humanity. Since Adam and Eve were the only two human beings on earth, their sons and daughters had no choice but to marry and reproduce with their siblings and close relatives. The second generation had to marry their cousins, just as after the flood the grandchildren of Noah had to intermarry amongst their cousins. One reason that incest is so strongly discouraged in the world today is the understanding that reproduction between closely related individuals has a much higher risk of causing genetic abnormalities. In the early days of humanity, though, this was not a risk due to the fact that the human genetic code was relatively free of defects.

Another consideration is that incest today almost always involves a pre-pubescent or powerless victim, and the perpetrator is abusing his or her authority with the goal of unilateral sexual pleasure. By that standard, the “incest” of the Bible has nothing whatsoever in common with modern-day incest. There was no power difference between Cain and his wife, for example; the goal of Abraham and Sarah’s marriage was to create a family. Intermarriage among close family members was a necessity in the generations immediately following Adam and Noah and was not a sinful perversion of sex.

It seems that, by the time of Moses, the human genetic code had become polluted enough that close intermarriage was no longer safe. So, God commanded against sexual relations with siblings, half-siblings, parents, and aunts/uncles (Genesis 2:24 seems to indicate that marriage and sexual relations between parents and children were never allowed by God). It was not until many centuries later that humanity discovered the genetic reason that incest is unsafe and unwise. Genetics was not an issue in the early centuries of humanity, and the marriages that occurred between Adam and Eve’s children, Abraham and Sarah, and Amram and Jochebed were not selfish pursuits of sexual gratification or abuses of authority; accordingly, those relationships should not be viewed as incestuous. The key is that sexual relations between close relatives were viewed differently pre-Law and post-Law. It did not become “incest” until God commanded against it.

All 'Holy Scriptures' are difficult to understand, or ambiguous, just like a prediction of Nostradamus, or a horoscope, palm reading, phone psychic, etc, so they can mean almost anything people want them to.

My point is that people read things, and interpret them in ways different than the author intended, or the bias of the translator skews the meaning. We see this all the time, intentionally, on message boards. I thrive on the fruit of people who cannot explicitly state what they mean, or intentionally mislead others. Without that, there would be no trolling.

For a Biblical example, consider the brothers Er and Onan, both whacked by THE LORD, in Genesis, 30 something. Er, the older brother, was wicked, and killed. What he did is not specified. Onan is the great, great great, yada yada grandfather of 'the money shot'; he had BBFS with his brother's widow, but wasted his seed, by not coming inside her. THE LORD smote him for that, and that's why rubbing one out was considered sinful until VERY recently. He just didn't want to be responsible for raising someone else' kid. Now every guy is an Onan, in more senses than one, because THE LORD doesn't smite people anymore.

People for centuries have justified despicable actions by using The Bible, or often things that they think are in The Bible, to forgive themselves.

Consider Proverbs 13:24: "He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes." from the King James Version translation. How many men have grown up in a family with a father who used a belt or stick to discipline his sons, but not his daughters, based on this translation to English? How many of those same men 'disciplined' their daughters, in other ways?

This may sound silly to an intelligent person, of which there are some present, but since when is intelligence a prerequisite for being a parent?

Now parents are not allowed to discipline their children, because of the court of public opinion, and look how well they're turning out. Food for thought, from the latex rubber industry.

@ Canada-Man: Any children 'begotten' (that word sounds so 'red neck'!), increases the likelihood of a 'recessive gene' manifesting itself, things like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, etc., where both parents need to be 'carriers'. The most famous example is hemophilia in the Royal families of Europe, all mostly related to each other. When humans were rare on Earth, and the wheel had not yet been invented, it was pretty difficult to make children with someone who was not, at minimum, a first cousin blood relative. There aren't too many different hands you can make, if you play a game of cards with an eight card deck. Evolution isn't linear; it stays static for long periods, and for every positive mutation, there are dozens of duds. Not everybody wants to be or should be a genetic parent. Unfortunately, all too often, people become parents not because they want to, but because other people expect them to. You show me someone who has lots of kids, and nine times out of ten, they grow older, quicker.

Christianity is the most hypocritical of all the religions, imo. As someone who's grown up around those who constantly preach it, study it and who "lovingly" have tried to ingrain in me, it's importance and "truths", I can say, no wonder I'm no longer "religious". From my experience, those who know the bible, those who study it, and who live by it's word, are more judgemental of others, less tolerant of others, especially their religions, less forgiving of those who live differently than themselves, critical of anything unconventional and so occupied with dying, that many of them don't live life. But that's just my experience.

@ Cristy: The vast majority of people don't want to make their own decisions. When someone makes their own decisions, they can't blame someone else, when things don't turn out like they had planned. Many of these same people, however, attempt to make decisions for other people, so they can take the credit if the outcome is positive, but they don't take responsibility, if it isn't. When none of their friends or siblings will continue to allow them to do this, they generally chose to become parents, so they can continue to interfere in someone else' life.

Totally agree. The fatal flaw of all belief systems is that each and every one, by their very nature, fundamentally breeds contempt and friction. Humans struggle when asked to subscribe to, and fully endorse one philosophy, without automatically and categorically denouncing all others.

In modern society, Islam is the most pronounced offender in this regard, but virtually every other faith-based belief system shares the same issues, even if they are less overt in nature.

The hypocrisy of all faith-based belief systems is that they all preach tolerance, but in fact, each systemically sets up its subscribers to fail as the systems themselves are intolerant by design.
