Decided to partake in a 5k race this evening. Mind you I was up at 3:30 this morning, had already fun 6K, worked 8 hours, ate on the run and drove an hour to get there...

Finished in 27:50...And claimed second in my age category

Once again, I started at the back of the field, and started to grind my way into the mid field. Feels weird and rather good at the same time to pass people who are in obviously better physical condition than you. :p I just with the slim blonde with the cute ass was faster so that she could have stayed ahead of me longer. :( On the other had, I nearly had a bike accident as well, as a cyclist popped onto the path in front of me, from behind some bushes.

Since it was threatening to rain, I didn't wear my ipod, so I also worked on some mindfulness exercises.

Oh, and why no avatar threads for moi?

Umm, your avatar is 'blank'. I don't think we should mess with that.

P.S. Congrats on being a loser!

Wish I could say I was shedding pounds by exercising and running like you do.

As an armchair coach, however, I commend you for setting you pace not by the fastest runner but rather by the prettiest bum in the race.

Congrats Dave

Congrats Dave

You won second place in your second race correct?

Keep up the good work, you're doing fantastic.

No need to whine about not having an avatar poll in your name.

LOOK AT ME, NOBODY has mentioned me?

Throw me that loser chair will ya and Jiggy can I borrow a Kleenex?:???:

Glad you enjoyed your Fun 6K, it sucks when they ain't isn't it? Was this one just as fun?

I bet it was since you were with that cute blond with the nice ass.....you shoulda got pics and posted them here for us!

BTW: it's good to be looser, if you're too uptight you end up with irritable bowel and stress problems...

I got into a heated discussion with someone over these "races" and how ecologically unsound they are. He was all "i'm green I'm green" (personal trainer). He says "what I do doesn't contribute pollution to the environment. I say "bullshit", what he does is basically burns energy and achieves/contributes nothing.

For eg: you eat food, which is most likely processed, shipped to the store, kept cold, warm, or preserved, the store is lit, staffed and consumed energy to build and maintain. The farm the food was grown on consumed energy and produced green house gases during the growing or raising of the food. The food consumed for this recreation (because that is really what it is) is 100% waste. Would you consume as much "fuel" if you didn't run these races? Probably not.

Now you can say the difference is minor between what a runner would normally consume and what someone who doesn't run consumes, but multiply that by the hundreds (maybe thousands?) of runners and that minor amount starts to add up quite quickly. Now add in the fact that you had to drive to the event, and home again, and so did hundreds of others, and then you have the support people who did the same, is this really so green?

Now if you were all on a treadmill hooked to generators? then that fuel being spent would at least contribute something back to society.

Well I stuck with her for maybe a 1/2km. By then my lungs figured out what was going on and I easily passed her.

Now that is the problem with a broken libido....I still appreciate a nice bottom, or a pretty face....I'm just not turned on by them.

My call line for the race..."Let's go, ya chunky bastard." Nothing like being the fattest guy there....

You might wanna spell "loser" properly before you go places ;)

One thing you might want to think about, now that you are actively racing is adding in interval or speed work. Even as you are just getting into it, speed training (track work, sprints at different lengths, fartlek) will make a huge difference. So don't just run tempo (steady state) or race pace, sprint between telephone poles or find a running track (4 x 100, 2 x 200, 1 x 400, 2 x 200, 4 x 100) or some variation.

Over time, you may even want think in terms of periodization, base, tempo, speed, taper but for now, simply adding speed work in will make for huge dividends.

Sounds like you are doing all of the right things. Keep having fun with it.
