In October 2010, a young man driving drunk on the Hebei University campus struck two college women on rollerblades, killing one. The driver—the son of the deputy chief of the district police—continued on, dropping off his girlfriend. When security guards and students finally stopped him, he shouted: “Charge me if you dare. My father is Li Gang.” This scandal seemed to encapsulate China’s problems with corruption and abuse of power. Accusations of an attempted cover-up included conspiracy theories about a body double. Because Li Gang’s son was known under two different names, Li Yifan and Li Qiming, rumors spread that one of these names belonged to the hired substitute. One Internet poster wrote sarcastically: “Even if he had received a life sentence, he could still find someone to be his stand-in!”

Can we hope North America doesn't adapt this type of behavior.

Ah,very good point mamasan!
While they can't adapt this type of behaviour, the rich and shameless already use other methods.....how about the oj simpson trial? that was a farce...he was guilty as sin, everybody knew it but the trial was so corrupted and convoluted that he got off....he didn't need to high a replacement.
That's why I say our and the US's system has become a LEGAL system not a justice system......with the right lawyer and enough money, you can get off with a slap on the wrist. I point out a case a few years ago where 2 rich brats were racing their parent's merc and bmw and killed a cab driver....they got off with 1 year house arrest.......for killing someone.....
But then again, with our fucked up system, that asshole who shot up the eaton center was under house arrest....HOUSE arrest? WTF is that?

Yes this one was a disgrace. The judge that put him under house arrest is now an a sabbatical leave and the media cannot track her down. How fitting is that?
That actually isn't a bad idea....make judges in some way responsible for the decisions they make on the bench. For example: if a person is found guilty of a crime, then the judge lets him off with a slap on the wrist, and he recommits a similar crime while out, for the duration of what the prison sentence should have been, then the judge is fined or disciplined......
For example: a guy is convicted of armed robbery. The maximum sentence is 8 yrs in jail. The judge gives him 1 yr less 3/1 for time served awaiting trial.....he's out right after being found guilty.
If he recommits a crime in that 8 yrs, then the judge has to be put in jail for 1 day for every 3 he should have been in prison...Might make the judges more apt to apply THE FUCKING PENALTIES WE HAVE IN PLACE.......
