between here and the US.

As we all have discovered the exact same item here costs sometimes double what it does in the US. Finally there is going to be an inquiry as to why.

The 15% mentioned in the story is typical of the "official" outlook on this issue. I have found that prices are more likely to be double than a mere 15%. A perfect example is 42" flat screen tvs. They were readily available for $400 years before they even got close to that price here.

Another example is vehicles. We're talking 30 40 and sometimes 50% difference.

Yup, about fucking time. Tired of paying US prices on book stores that clearly they had a fix on it.

Is it election time again

Lol no....I never realized that this type of investigation was something the Senate ever did. Doesn't this sound like something the office of some Minister of State or another should handle rather than a bunch of old farts with no sigificant investigative staff support?

Just my 2 cents but on some items you may be paying import taxes.

China enjoys a most favored nation status in the US.
I believe that allows them sell stuff here and not pay the import taxes.

Yeah, we're paying import taxes, duties, surcharges, levies, PMjet tax, etc etc etc etc etc and etc.

I was just looking at a book to buy the other day. Inside the cover? US: 14.95 Can: $29.95...gimme a frucking BREAK

I have often wondered about that one myself.
And if you pay in Green Backs will you get the lower price?

I have an address in Lewiston, NY just to send a lot of my online purchases to just for this reason. I pay $200 for the year and they will accept and store all of my packages for me for no extra cost. It also come in handy for my business when I do not want to pay the broker fees since I just carry it across my self

Yeah, I wonder what the problem is? Our finance minister is a genius, he might figure this out! One day after he calls for the investigation, one answer emerges!

The Retail Council of Canada also said it is looking forward to clearing up the confusion. Spokeswoman Anne Kothawala said in an interview that the council has spoken to Flaherty in the past about why the gap exists and one reason is tariffs on imports that can go as high as 18 per cent.
"Lots of sporting equipment, hockey skates, running shoes, track suits, pillows, cotton clothing and other items carry an 18 per cent tariff on them, so as a Canadian retailer it is 18 per cent more expensive to sell that product to a consumer," she said.

Oh, that is it! We tax it before it gets here! Bet Jim did not see that coming :p! We may have free trade with US and Mexico, but not with the rest of the world! So about the only thing you can complain about in the price gap is if your interested in buying a Ford from the U.S.! Btw do not think that if it was made in Canada it will be cheaper! We tax ourselves out of business too!

Nope, it's the location of the purchase, not the currency. Speaking of which, now that the Beaver Buck is worth more than the Greenback, will US stores start accepting it now?

As for tariffs, it is my understanding that tariffs were put in place years ago to promote even trade or "fair" trade. ie: the cost of buying cheaper offshore items would be similar to buying products made in Canada. But since our manufacturing sector has taken a nose dive and even products "made in Canada" are simply assembled here and made in china, they should be removed. They should also be removed on items that aren't made here at all. Flat Panel TVs for eg. NO one in the US or Canada makes them here so why are there tariffs?

I mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that all these import duties, tariffs, levies, are just another tax grab by the government.

I liked O'Bama's speech the other night and his attitude towards taxing the rich. I mean, it isn't rocket sciene to realize that if you have more people working, more people buying items, that means more income tax revenue and more HST revenue. Therefore the net result is a gain. Reduce or eliminate the tariffs on imported items, that results in more retail sales, which means that you (the taxman) gets more in the long run...basic economics.

BUT oh yeah, I forgot for a second we're talking about politicians who have NO fricken idea about economics......

A perfect example is an ad I saw for McSquinty. He said that he "reduced the cost of electricity" by instigating the clean energy rebate. WTF??? He failed to mention that he increased the cost of electricity by adding in the HST.....is he absolutely DAFT? Or does he just think WE are???? I mean, I'm not a math whiz or anything but his attitude is: it is saving you money by paying $25.00 for something you used to pay $20.00 for........wtf??

We are screwed up the ying yang by big companies (private) and government. The corporations feed us a load a crap i.e. oil companies (No collusion my ass), insurance companies, ect.... then you have government (Mafia) always after their juice (TAX)

Another bee I have under my bonnet is buying US dollars. I was at Scotiabank the other day buying some US funds. The news announced the Canadian dollar at 1.03. I purchased 1000 and received back $996.74 back. The bank add their service charge and processing the money exchange. It's a bloody joke and it gets played on us everyday.

That's just about right, I typically take the current official exchange rate and add 3-3.5% for transaction fees. So getting $997 back would be within that range. If you go beyond the banks, let's say to a place like Accu-rate, you might be able to get between 2.5-3% transaction fees instead.

I was wondering the same thing. Let's see, the Senate in Canada is that unelected, powerless assembly that is often ignored, isn't it? When is the powerful elected body going to look at it?

I have a question: why were you buying US dollars?

If you're going to the US just get your money out of an ATM, no transaction fee percentage. usually it's just the $1.50 non bank fee per transaction. When I travelled in the US on business I used to buy US cash at the banks. Then one trip ran longer and I needed more money so I took it out....yup, only cost me $1.50 on $500 US...what's that? .3%???

I tried the same thing when I was in Mexico, I tell ya, it was COOL to see 34,987,000.00 in my bank lol.....

If you happen to have a no non-bank atm fee plan, it won't even cost you the $1.50......

Hey Luvasian, I love the animated gif in your signature, it's hilarious. Where does it come from?
