The names of the Mississauga woman and the daughter she allegedly beat to death can now be reported after Superior Court Justice Deena Baltman lifted a publication ban on their names Wednesday in Brampton.
Baltman ordered the ban on Jan. 12 at the request of the Crown.
In reversing that decision today, Baltman highlighted the fact that the case was already heavily reported on in 2012 following Jha’s arrest, when names and family photos were widely circulated.
The judge also relied on a previous ruling at the Brampton courthouse from Justice John Sproat who, at the Star’s request, lifted a publication ban in January on the names of Sean and Maria Hosannah, convicted of manslaughter in the death of their 2-year-old daughter, Matinah.
Sproat ruled that if a publication ban was necessary in a case of accused adults with children and an unusual surname, then it would be necessary in every case.
“I am not persuaded that the existing ban is necessary in this case,” said Baltman on Wednesday.
Jha sat impassive next to her lawyer. She has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.
