How do you know who sent them, how does one send them??

Interesting issue.
I too have wondered about this. We have a system that tracks and logs Likes and Thanks on each member's profile page. But in each case the person who clicked those buttons remains anonymous here on the board, with the Thanks/Like post recording activity like so:
Ironically, if you have your settings directed to send you an email notification of PMs, you will also get notifications of Thanks/Like . . . with the member's name revealed.
