Lindsay Shepherd, the teaching assistant who rose to prominence after she was controversially disciplined for showing her class part of a TVOntario program on gender-neutral pronouns, is suing Wilfrid Laurier University, two professors, and a manager of the school’s Diversity and Equity Office.

She claims harassment, intentional infliction of nervous shock, negligence, and constructive dismissal. The “attacks” on her “have rendered her unemployable in academia,” she claims, and forced her to abandon her career plans for further graduate study and teaching.

The statement of claim, which seeks $3.6 million, was filed Tuesday in Waterloo, Ont., and as yet no statements of defence have been filed.

In addition to Laurier, Shepherd’s suit names Nathan Rambukkana, the professor of the course for which Shepherd was a teaching assistant; Herbert Pimlott, Masters program coordinator; and Adria Joel, acting manager of gender violence prevention in the Diversity and Equity Office. It describes them as “predators” who were “bullying” Shepherd in a disciplinary meeting, a recording of which Shepherd and later released publicly.

This is getting tiresome. One person does wrong, gets reprimanded then sues. One person does right and another will find a way to sue him.

Wilfrid Laurier University may have thought that its public-relations problems ended in December, when its president admitted it should have never investigated a grad school’s decision to show a gender-neutral pronoun debate in class.

But the Canadian university’s problems are just beginning, as evidenced by new enrollment figures across Ontario institutions.

Laurier Finance Prof. William McNally pointed out the university’s admissions confirmations as of June 7 have declined 15.2 percent from a year ago, while first-place choices are down 12.5 percent, both the worst in the province.

This is in stark contrast to province-wide confirmations, which rose by 0.3 percent, he said: “Failing to stand for truth has consequences.”

So a teachers assistant chose to pick, as part of a "communications studies class on grammar", a TVOntario program on gender-neutral pronouns, and didn't expect the possibility of some form of backlash ?

Mind you, if the professor responsible didn't insist on reviewing her class content, and there was no guide lines set by him or the school, then he has no right to attack what she did.

But so is the state of our "education" system.

Agreed, but my point was, she was a teachers assistant, and this is can be controversial subject.

Did the school handle this correctly, lawfully, nope, but such are elite in the education system, who feel they are untouchables.
