TORONTO - A Mississauga man is facing charges after $11,000 in cancer donations were stolen from a Hamilton hotel, police announced Wednesday.
Hamilton Police allege the accused took a cash box during a charity dinner after the Ride to Conquer Cancer event at the Sheraton Hotel on Saturday.
A man was captured on security camera leaving the event with the box.
According to police the man was arrested at a downtown Hamilton hotel without incident Tuesday afternoon.
“After he was arrested, police sought and received a search warrant for the hotel room he had rented and recovered a portion of the stolen cash from there,” Det.-Const. Greg Slack said.
Donations for the event, which benefits The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, had come from riders who had attended the dinner along with other donations made throughout the night.
Officers received several tips from the public after they appealed for help locating the suspect.
“Something that brazen is definitely unique,” Slack said.
“But, we’re happy that the outcome was relatively quick and are happy to get the money back to the cancer (charity).”
Brian Ross Peebles has been charged with theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property over $5,000.
