Mayor Rob Ford is taking a break from the mayoral election campaign in order to get help, says his lawyer.

The decision comes after a new audio recording of Ford ranting and swearing in an Etobicoke bar was obtained by the Toronto Sun.

The Star has not been able to verify the details contained in the recording.

According to the Sun, the recording was taped Monday night by a guest at Sullie Gorman’s, a bar in Etobicoke. It reportedly contains Ford “being unruly as he’s ordering booze, complaining about his wife Renata and making lewd comments about mayoral contender Karen Stintz.”

Ford’s lawyer, Dennis Morris, told the Star that the mayor told him Wednesday that he is taking a leave but not quitting the campaign.

“He’s doing what I think most of the population thought would be appropriate a number of months ago. At that time he didn’t think he should, and now I think he realizes, so that’s a good step.”

Morris said that Ford has not said how long the leave will be or what exact help he will be seeking. He also said the leave may not begin immediately.

“I don’t think he’s going to be flying out at midnight somewhere,” he said. “I think it’s fresh, and there’s various things that maybe people will recommend, and we’ll figure it out.”

What would it say about Toronto if he actually wins the election?
 
I would be really disappointed if we let this man back in office. He needs to get himself in order and stay away from politics while he does so.
 
Does he really think a 30 day rehab will help him?. What he should do is get new friends stay away from politics for a while and take care of his family.

No one will vote for him now.
 
I would be first in line to watch his first movie. John Goodman will be the ideal actor to play Rob.

Doug always new about his brother's problems and was in complete denial. He should have forced him to seek help years ago but turned away for the right to have political power.

As a new video surfaces of belligerent behaviour in a bar, Mayor Rob Ford’s brother and campaign manager said the family will be releasing information Friday that will “put an end to all speculation" on concerns of his whereabouts and treatment.

Councillor Doug Ford told the Toronto Sun Thursday night that allegations the mayor has been out of the supervision of professionals or has been seen in cars or coffee shops are completely false, maintaining he has not once been in public since he went into rehab last week.
“We’ll put out something (Friday) that will prove that,” he said. “Since the day he went in, he has never been out in public.”

Ever since he went in to seek help last week, Doug Ford said, the mayor has been taking it seriously.
“He has at all times been under the supervision of medical professionals and never once been alone one day in treatment,” he said.

Doug Ford responded to questions I sent him after allegations surfaced the mayor had left his original treatment centre and was in a hidden location for three days before returning.

“He was at the clinic until three nights ago and now has been taken back,” said the source, whose account could not be verified with photographic evidence.
The claim was the mayor was away from rehab for three days this week — possibly in Muskoka.
In his interview with me this week, Mayor Ford said “rehab is amazing. It reminds me of football camp.” He also said in the meetings “there are two doctors here, a captain of industry and a professional athlete.”

But a source said this was said to me when Ford was not in the facility.
Doug Ford said these are accounts from people who are trying to undermine the mayor’s recovery and sabotage his desired recovery.

When I spoke with him Tuesday, Mayor Ford said, ”They will be moving me around.”
His brother Doug said whether it’s “one, two or 10 locations” the mayor has been under supervision 24-7” and that the treatment he is receiving is considered “one of the best.”

He would not provide the location or locations the mayor is receiving the treatment.
Doug Ford said to “avoid putting at risk 25 families” the “location will not be disclosed” but he says there is no accuracy to claims the mayor has been away from treatment and that he wouldn’t put his reputation on the line to put out false information.

Meanwhile, a new video, said to be shot in a bar on Weston Rd. on April 27, has been given to the Sun for no fee showing Mayor Ford yelling profanities which include “no one better f--- with me. I’m going to kick you in the f---ing head.”
This video is said to have been recorded during the same three-day period late last month when an audio recording of hurtful and threatening remarks was made in an

Etobicoke bar and an alleged crack video was shot in his sister’s basement.
Ford’s brother said, “What happened in the past is the past. We now understand that the mayor has addiction problems and our goal is to help him get well.”
Addiction counsellor Mark Elliot, himself a former high profile radio DJ who quit his job at CFRA in Ottawa on the air because of a cocaine addiction but in recovery now helps addicts, says if there is anything to Ford’s possible bumpy start in rehab, it would not only be “normal” but “expected.”

There is nothing easy about settling into the rigours of rehab, said Elliot, who now hosts People Helping People Sunday nights on Newstalk 1010.
“When I was in rehab I didn’t unpack my bag for 10 weeks,” Elliot said. “It would be especially difficult for Mayor Ford because he doesn’t dictate the rules, they do.”
Elliot said, if he treats rehab seriously there is no reason why Ford can’t move on to conduct a productive life.
“Lots of people have,” he said.

The source who contacted the Sun with information that Ford was away from treatment was relieved to understand he’s reportedly fully involved in recovery.
“That’s a good thing and maybe he should be allowed to heal in peace,” the source said.

Doug Ford said he is hopeful after he releases evidence tomorrow, the media and political opponents will allow that to happen.
