Missy Franklin , the U.S. swim team's new sensation, whose parents are Canadian,(she has dual citizenship) won the gold medal today in the 100m backstroke.

I can understand her swimming for the U.S.- endorsements, cha-ching!

Hopefully she will one day swim for Canada at the olympics to honour her parents.

Maybe but think about it...some athletes hardly receive any financial nor moral support from Canada. It is difficult to train and fundraise simultaneously. Yet when an athlete has to pay most of his or her share to get to the Olympics , do you think it is fair for this athlete to feel proud of his/her country?

Hit is for posting about an American gold winner. Post Canadian winners dude.

Hit is a big miss!

Revoke her Canadian citizenship unless she pays 100% higher taxes with her US endorsement money.

I agree with Hof. She is playing for the money.

we don't know the specifics, she could be down there simply because she couldn't swim for us here for some reason. I've heard rumors that you could be the best in the world but not make the team due to politics etc.

Do we already have a swimmer in that event? if so, maybe there wasn't room for her on the team......

I remember when ben johnson was running for us there was a joke going around that went something like: what'd a canadian say to an american? I bet our jamaicans can run faster than your jamaicans.......

Chill guys, she has lived most of her life in Colorado. Her father was an exec there in a couple of big US companies. She does visit Nova Scotia a fair bit where she has relatives. A cool kid.

if the guys on the fan are accurate.... she was born and raised in Colorado but has dual citizenship. When they went out to try for the olympic team her mother asked her if she wanted to try out in Canada where the pressure would be less and the team easier to make.

She declined saying that she was born in the U.S. and would swim for them. Nothing wrong with that. ( if the guys in the fan are correct )

There was a little story on her on CTV. Brian Williams interviewed her. Yes she was born in the US to two Canadian parents and lives in Colorado. She said she loves Canada and visits relatives often in Nova Scotia. Really nice kid and only 17.

Missy the Missle

Here is another non Canadian winner but a Royalty of a story.

GREENWICH—“I messed up.”Steady on girl, there’s still silver in them stirrups.Zara Phillips, granddaughter to the Queen, went from disappointment in her ride to team jubilation as Great Britain took second place in the equestrian sport of team eventing Tuesday afternoon.

The 31-year-old knocked down one fence — the Post Box and Penny Black — during her round aboard the aptly named High Kingdom. But teammates Mary King and William Fox-Pitt both competed clear. When their final rider Tina Cook was penalized just one time point, Team GB secured the second place finish just behind Germany.Show jumping is the third and final phase of team eventing, held in scenic Greenwich Park.

The Brits came into Day 4 of the competition in silver position, thanks in no small part to Zara’s gutsy performance Monday in the cross-country segment.
In the mixed zone, Phillips let her horse of the hook, taking responsibility for the single knock-down.

“I made the mistake. It was my fault.” High Kingdom, known more familiarly as Trev, performed “really well,” she said.
“He’s such a dude,”

she’d enthused earlier.
A solid royal cheering section turned out again to support Phillips: William and Kate, Prince Harry, mum Anne, the Princess Royal — who competed in this event at the Montreal Olympics in 1976, where she was famously thrown off her horse in the cross-country — and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.Granny, who prefers horse racing on the flats, did not attend.Zara was also watched anxiously by her husband, the former England rugby player, Mike Tindall. Her father, Capt. Mark Phillips, won Olympic gold in 1972 and silver in 1988. He now coaches the American eventing team.Canada’s team finished well back at 13th.

I agree with Hof. She is playing for the money.

I agree with Peace. Have you participated in an elite sport where it demands you to train exclusively in order to stay on par with other elite athletes? It is incredibly expensive and time consuming. If I were her, I would do the same thing. Besides she was born in USA.
