It turns out even monkeys can’t resist a good bargain.
A North York Ikea store attracted an unusual customer Sunday afternoon, when a tiny monkey dressed in a fitted faux shearling coat and diapers appeared in the store’s upper parking garage around 2 p.m.

“It was just running around screaming,” said shopper Bronwyn Page. “There was a crowd of us around it and it seemed really scared and agitated.”

UPDATE: Ikea monkey is named Darwin, and 'he's not very happy right now'

Security guards at the Ikea, near Leslie St. and Highway 401, eventually cornered the animal in the elevator vestibule and called police. Animal Services soon arrived at the store to pick up the stylish bargain-hunter.

“It was really cute,” said Lisa Lin, another shopper. “It was smaller than a cat.”

But if the monkey had hoped to stock up on Billy bookcases or Swedish meatballs, its plans were thwarted. The diminutive shopper never made it into the store, said manager Alvaro Carmona.

No one was hurt in the incident, which lasted no more than half an hour, he added.

Animal Services identified the monkey as a rhesus macaque, an Asian species that is prohibited in Ontario. The monkeys are known for their ability to live in diverse habitats — although Canadian winters obviously require a warm coat.

The owner of the primate turned himself in to Animal Services just after 5 p.m. He was charged with owning a prohibited animal, an offence that carries a $200 fine.

The seven-month-old monkey somehow managed to escape his owner’s car in the Ikea parking lot, said animal control officer David Behan.
Behan said the owner was cooperative in signing over the primate to Animal Services. The owner’s name has not been released.

As for the half-metre tall simian, he is in good health and will likely be transferred to a sanctuary as soon as possible.

“The monkey was in a bit of shock, but it’s calmed down now that we’ve been feeding it some grapes,” another animal services representative said.
“At least it’s warm and safe now ... It tried to keep warm in the coat the best that an animal of its size could.”

The monkey-business captivated the Twitterverse Sunday afternoon and attracted coverage in and .

Two parody accounts, @IkeaMonkey and @Ikea_Monkey appeared within hours. “The Ikea monkey might have better luck assembling furniture than I ever had,” said one tweeter.

“Draft Ikea monkey for mayor,” tweeted another, with the monkey photoshopped in front of City Hall.

it was all over the news up here and I have to say, that's pretty fucking funny.......of course the jokes were rampant, like: if it made it into the ball room, would the attendants just think: hey, that's one ugly kid, I can't wait to see the parents lol.

I don't know why these types are banned, I can see larger simians like chimps or orangutans, but this dapper little guy isn't anymore dangerous than a shih tzu.....I guess the owner should have given him a hat and boots too!

A buddy from a long time ago had a squirrel monkey (before I knew him) and he used to take him everywhere. He'd sit on his shoulder (with a lead and collar of course) and people would love him. A great way to pick up women lol......My buddy said he'd let him out of his "home" when he got home from work and it'd sit on the back of the couch and watch tv with him, use the toilet, find the remote etc.

I spank my monkey regularly, I hope nobody tries to take my monkey away!!

Unless one is a trained primatologist a person really shouldn't be keeping primates, they will not be provided for in a responsible manner. The enrichment they require is quite extensive, when a male goes through sexual maturation it can become rather aggressive and it really doesn't matter how large the animal is it can become rather difficult to care for, the females will have different health needs at sexual maturation that one may not be aware of and that can sometimes become life threatening. Then of course there are the various health issues that come with the species that one may not be aware of, it's important to understand that and to not put not only yourself but others at risk, to cause an outbreak of something viral simply by ones own ignorance is unacceptable especially because of ones desire to own an exotic pet.
The rights of the animal to live in it's own habitat in relative freedom should trump our desire to keep it in an unhealthy and unsafe captivity however if that isn't reason enough then the right to protect the public from individuals from those illequipped to care for the species should trump the right for them to own the animal.

For those that are interested Darwin the Ikea Monkey has now found his way to a sanctuary in Ontario and donations can be made online.

I'm curious, how did you embarrass the crown? I would love to do that the next time I have to fight a traffic ticket!

I didn't embarrass the crown - he did it all to himself. He fiercely and maliciously prosecuted me without there ever being a chance of a conviction. I was the one who was assaulted and had the video tape to prove it - yet when I showed the crowns they laughed at it and continued on prosecuting me (yep that's where your tax money goes - to dumbfuck lawyers)

The Judge started reading my verdict all straight-faced and as she was reading it she broke out in laughter. So did I. Composed herself quickly and continued reading about how the witnesses 'snickered' on the stand and testified 'blah blah blah' or 'i don't remember', or 'u know' as their answers under my cross-examination ..then she started to crack up again and by now the whole courtroom was laughing with her. The crown with his tail under his ass run outta the courtroom threatening to charge me for sending him an email calling him and the cops bigots. lol

Good for you HB. The cops and the lawyers sometimes feel they can do whatever they like and to whomever they wish.

Maybe Rob Ford could have used your talents because his lawyers and advisor suck! LOL

hey Kyra, I agree to all that but what you've said is really no different than any other species we keep as "pets". I know, one could argue that cats and dogs etc have become domesticated thereby making them more suitable pets but we had to start somewhere right?

I mean, put a female dog in heat around a pitbull and you'd better not be standing between him and the female......

I read up on the net and there are as many people out there with great stories about keeping small primates as pets as there are horror stories......but like the people (me) who kept a snake as a pet, you have to be a responsible owner first and foremost.

As for H Bee and her triumphs in court.....I'll believe it when I see the court transcripts because, well, one can say anything about anyone and any occurrance here and there is nothing to prove them truthful, or lying......

Hey everyone, I just won a gulfstream G2 and will be flying my hot supermodel girlfriend to my new home in monaco.......so now you know where I am if I'm not here for a bit......!!:biggrin2:

tboy you are welcome to order the transcripts from court, they are $3.20 per page and there are probably around 10,000 pages. I did order the transcript from the last day cuz i need it for the civil lawsuits

BTW would you believe me if I told you I DON'T GIVER DAMN WHETHER YOU BELIEVE ME OR NOT? LOL
