actually they are more efficient than washing by hand. Studies have shown that one uses much more water and electricity doing it this way.

For eg: I'm single, I typically wash my plate, fork, spoon, knife, glass etc after every meal. I don't fill the sink I just let the water run.....well, in the time it takes me to do one "wash" I probably used as much water as one load in the dishwasher. It is far more efficient to do 5 days worth of dishes at once, using the same amount of water than one at a time.....
