Natural Gas: System Rate vs Brokerage Rate

Hello Everyone,

I just bought my first house and am trying to understand how natural gas rates work.

My understanding is that the system rate is adjusted quarterly and that it is broken down into 'current, transportation and storage', all in cubic metres (m3). When I go to energyshop.com, it lists suppliers, 1, 2, 3 and 5 yr fixed rates and a 5 yr step up rate (whatever that is), as well as variable transportation rates, but no storage rates.

Any help understanding how this works and advise based on previous experience is greatly appreciated. I have heard stories of people locking into a bad price and being trapped for 5 yrs. On the other hand, if you get a good price you can come out ahead of the game. Maybe the system rate is competatively set and the way to go over time.

Feel free to comment here or PM me.

Thank You in Advance!

Blissful,

When I tarbended I used to say a toast. "Here's to leather, here's to lace, here's to men who give good face." Does that answer your question?
