Now I know why the younger generation is not as sharp.

Let me take that back.

Teens who smoke marijuana regularly may suffer long-term damage to their brains, new research suggests.
Age of onset for cannabis use and brain development seems to be key, said lead researcher Madeline Meier, a post-doctoral researcher at Duke University in Durham, N.C.

The researchers looked at how IQ scores changed between ages 13 and 38 in more than 1,000 participants from New Zealand who were born in 1972 and 1973 and followed until age 38.

The key variable was the age of onset for marijuana use and the brain's development, Meier said.
Before the age of 18, the brain is still being organized and is thought to be be more vulnerable to damage from drugs.

Persistent cannabis use appeared to affect everyday cognitive functioning, with persistent users showing more attention and memory problems than other participants, the researchers reported in Monday's online issue of the PNAS.

About five per cent of the study group were considered marijuana-dependent, or were using more than once a week before age 18. A dependent user is one who keeps using despite significant health, social or family problems.

The participants had tests including memory, reasoning and processing speed.
IQ scores dropped only in those who became dependent by age 18, the researchers found, after taking years of education and use of other drugs including alcohol into account.

The scores dropped by an average of eight points among those considered dependent in three or more surveys.
For someone of average intelligence, an eight-point drop would mean ranking higher than 29 per cent of the population instead of 50 per cent, Meier said.

Earlier studies did not measure brain function before marijuana use began.
"I think this is the cleanest study I've ever read" that looks for long-term harm from marijuana use, said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse, which helped fund the research along with the British government, and a foundation in Zurich.

Ken Winters, a psychiatry professor at the University of Minnesota and senior scientist at the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia, said the new findings aren't definitive, but they underscore the importance of studying how marijuana may harm young people.

He had no role in the work.

Jeez don't tell this to any chronic users because they'll.....uhm....what?

The younger generation? Hell I smoked a lot of weed listening to Pink Floyd ( when they were new releases :biggrin2:).

Perhaps heavily reliance on technology contributes to this problem. For example, the older generation's cursive writing skills remain way superior than the younger generation's. Of course, one would argue that cursive writings aren't necessary.
What about the value of research and gathering information? The younger generation just google everything as if it is the answer to everything. Of course, it is useful but there are other ways of gathering information to arrive at a better conclusion.
Then again, I could be wrong as the older generation has proven to f...ed up on many issues repeatedly such as war, corruption, politics, etc...

I agree with this as well.

There was a recent study …i have to find the reference…concluding that texting had lead to a decline in grammar and writing skills.
Preoccupation with technology….errr..and ahem…the internet (boards..lol)..removes the child/adult from not only more cognitive building exercises but physical ones.

Found and thread(ed) it :) Ref:

It's also because we're letting them be dumb. I'm down south, and the locals are actually debating dropping algebra from the curriculum because too many kids are failing it or it's dropping their GPAs.

I had issues with the Education System in the States......but I will not go on about that...

I have a couple of friends who's sons are into smoking...and they have issues.....
If BC could be the study province I think people would be shocked about what is really
happening.....Look I smoked when I was 14, did a few other things to experiment but it was
not for me.....I was avoiding issues....

When we move to BC, I saw how many teens were smoking up I was in shock..it is easy there
to get it......but some of the parents are doing it too. At first when the first study came out I was
concern at about who had published it.....Once you are an adult then whatever but if you need the time
for you to develop well Parents be parents....

Yes because it doesn't matter when you are going a degree in "Communications" (which I always thought was funny remembering a barely intelligible football player on a pre-game show who called his major Comnicationins".)

If you want to do anything else you better have the basics down first.

what were we talking about again?

Now, I'm not a scientist, but to have "proof" of some theory, in this case that smoking dope lowers your IQ, you'd have to have a study of a brain before smoking, during smoking, and after smoking. With no other outside influences in a controlled environment. I know they say they took some factors into account, but the only way to attribute these issues is to have no outside influences.

You would also have to take into account heredity, how did their parent's brains function during the same age time period?

I have no doubt that it does have some effect, and even though I partook/partake.....kids under 18 shouldn't be so able to use.....another reason I think it should be legalized and controlled, having it illegal means so many other means of acquiring it are available. If it was legal, these other means wouldn't be in the biz because there would be no profit in it for them.

But with that being said, when my niece was 15, she knew (and all the kids knew) what store to go to to buy smokes...the proprietor would charge them a premium but had no problem selling to minors...I had half a mind to call the police on him.......
