I guess at their old age they don't have better things to do.

“The words ‘all thy sons command’ in the English national anthem suggests that only male loyalty is being invoked," says Margaret Atwood, who has joined the Restore Our Anthem campaign.

The national anthem “O Canada” was gender-neutral 101 years ago and a group of prominent women including Margaret Atwood want to change it back.

The campaign launched Monday with a petition drive to get rid of the line “in all thy sons command,” the group said in a release.

Before 1913, the anthem used the phrase “thou dost in us command” and it was changed for no apparent reason, the group said. They’re advocating that the words read “in all of us command.”

The coalition also includes Sally Goddard, mother of Nichola Goddard, who was the first female Canadian solider killed in combat.

I believe that restoring the anthem celebrates the role that all Canadians play in the modern era,” Sally Goddard was quoted as saying in a release.

“It would recognize the heroes, leaders, and teachers who have made Canada what it is today – regardless of their gender.”

Said Atwood, “The words ‘all thy sons command’ in the English national anthem suggests that only male loyalty is being invoked.

“Restoring these lyrics to gender-neutral is not only an easy fix to make our anthem inclusive for all Canadians, but it’s also long overdue.”

Among the other women in the coalition are former prime minister Kim Campbell, retired senator and author Vivienne Poy, and Senator Nancy Ruth.

In view of how symbolic that song is, and how firmly impregnated in our brains, getting rid of the gender reference is the right thing to do.

Mind you, I'm not enamored of the archaic phrase "thou dost in us" and I suspect it will be a hard sell drumming that into our collective subconsciousness.

I think it would be smarter to change the phrase to "True patriot love in all of us command."

But I doubt Margaret Atwood, Sally Goddard, Kim Campbell and their colleagues are looking for advice on an escort review board.

Ugh! I am seriously starting to dislike Atwood, for the attention whoring she's been doing in the last decade or so. And Kim Campbell? That burp in Canadian history before Mulrooney's cons imploded?

Sigh!

How about we address the real problems before we change the dressing: More social services for the ass-rape taxes we pay, for men, women and children; toughen sentences for rape and abuse; stop politicizing science and religion; build an economic infrastructure that will empower men and women trying to eck out a living in this country.

This shit's just a distraction, more noise to obscure the real issues. To Atwood: You want attention? go write another freakin book. Otherwise, STFU.

Don't tempt me. I'd be decriminalising sex work faster than you can say BBBJ. :wink2:
