A woman in her 60s is recovering after she was pulled out of a burning apartment by an off-duty Mississauga firefighter Tuesday afternoon. Capt. Mike Strapko of Toronto Fire Services said the firefighter was at the Brioni’s supermarket underneath the apartment at 173 Gary Dr., near Jane St. and Hwy. 400, purchasing a sandwich when he heard the smoke alarm.

“He managed to rescue her,” said Capt. Strapko. “If he wasn’t there her injuries might have been worse.” The woman was transported to hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation and serious burns.
Strapko said the firefighter will be given the Rescue Merit Award.

Ryan Milligan, a cashier at Shop ’n Milk, which is next to Brioni’s, said he called 911 when a costumer told him about the smoke coming out of the roof. “Then all the windows blew out and three feet of fire came out of it,” Milligan said.

He said the firefighter dragged the woman out of the building minutes before emergency crews arrived. The one-alarm fire gutted the apartment and caused water damage and flooding to Brioni’s.

ayup.....fucked isn't it? One risks his life and has training to help him save lives and one drives a bus and biggest responsibility is to not hit anything and to make sure people pay their fare......
