. . . and we must have whiskey or you'll know why!
Pardon me for waxing all nostalgic, my friends, but just stumbled on this hit on my civvie facebook feed and got swamped by good vibes.
Two bars into this video and I immediately think of my pal and me shouting out the lyrics of that song after 4 beers. He's a minister now, has been for more than 30 years, but every once and a while when we get together, somewhere around the 4th beer we start looking for that next whiskey bar . . .
This was recorded in '68. Only saw The Doors in performance once myself, Isle of Wight 1970, sorta the Euro equivalent of Woodstock. Morrison was gone less than a year later. Jimi, he died in London just a couple weeks after the Isle of Wight gig. I believe that was his last performance.
Fuck, I loved Hendrix too. He had the licks. Man, he rearranged my mind with his fingers on that axe. But Morrison, he was the wordsmith, the L.A. lizard poet tunnelling through my brain, just a few years older than me but with a whole lifetime of experience on this Ontario kid.
It was a whole new world back then. I had faith in the future. Didn't know that the Students For a Democratic Society would all turn into suits working for IBM and CNN and George Bush and forgo their aspirations for a just society, leaving me with such regret for what my generation could've/should've achieved.
Saw Ray Manzarek live, solo, two summers ago. Didn't realize how close he was to the exit door. He looked so healthy, so vibrant, and he gave one helluva performance.
My favorite moment was backstage, where I grabbed a photo on my phone of one of the hottest young keyboard players anywhere, who had sat through that gig in rapt attention watching a master at work, now chatting with him in person, Manzarek so generous in spirit to the kid.
God bless the artists who mentor the young.
