So I'm moving in six weeks, into a first floor apartment. For security purposes, this means I need a dog and a gun, in that order.
I've had cats for two years, but for the fifteen years before that I had at least one dog. I prefer to start with puppies so I know they will be well-behaved, but I've thought long and hard about it and have to admit I just don't want to make a 10-15 year commitment.
So I've been looking online at adoptable senior/adult dogs, and it's just sad how many of them there are available. I'm thinking of getting two...I like having two animals, it makes me laugh to watch them interact, and I think it's good for them as well. Since I've been lucky enough to find someone who will take both my cats, I'm looking to see if I can find two older dogs who might otherwise be separated.
Originally I was thinking small dogs, under 20 lbs. but have decided against that for two reasons...first, I find many of the very-small breeds annoying. More importantly, small dogs tend to be barkier than larger ones, and I'm considerate of my neighbors. I will have to resist the lure of the very-big dogs, those really are my favorites. I'm not looking for a particular breed, but I've been doing a lot of breed research so I know what I'm dealing with when I find a dog I like. Short hair is mandatory, and there are some breeds I can't have in the apartment (the usual suspects) but other than that I'm trying not to restrict myself too much. It is important the dogs have experience with small children, I have young nephews.
Guns...I thought I would have to wait until I was done with gunschool and getting my permit before I could actually buy one, but this morning I see online the state govt. just approved a loosening of the gun laws and they will now honor any other state's permit-to-carry-concealed. I have a NY permit, so hopefully this bill will be signed.
I will still go to gunschool, of course, because I haven't touched a weapon in almost 3 years and I need the refresher. The range near my place offers several classes I'm interested in beyond the basic safety classes, and I think some private instruction would also be a good idea. The range is close enough to be able to go shooting regularly, which I really like because I think if you have a gun, you also have the responsibility to stay proficient with it.
I've been researching online, and I think I want a .22. Weight is a factor because of my wrist issues, I need something small and light. Also the recoil will be less, helping my accuracy.
Do you guys think a pink gun would make it more likely RogerRapist wouldn't take it seriously when I point it at him? Make no mistake, if I have raised a weapon to you, I have every intention of killing you. But I'd prefer not to, so am not sure if the pink would be any kind of factor in the aggressiveness of the reaction.
I don't know if you can put a red-dot scope on a .22, but if it's possible I would love to do that. I think that little dot makes a point more effectively than anything else, and anything that prevents actual shootings is a very good thing.
There are only two pink .22's I've found that I like the looks of...first is the Sig Mosquito, which I really like because it is a scaled-down version of the P226, which was the 9mm I have experience with. But it is apparently ammo-sensitive, only likes the high-end stuff, and I'm not sure if that would work with my preference for soft bullets...if I end up having to shoot the gun inside, I would like to minimize any collateral damage. There will be neighbors on the other side of the wall, I would hate to injure someone that way.
The other was a Cobra, but I think I've ruled it out because it only holds five rounds. Can anyone explain when it is properly called a magazine, and when is it a clip?
This morning I aggravated an old back injury, and the muscle pills are making me foggy, so if none of this made any sense I apologize. I hope it does, cause if not I'm higher than I realize. :tongue:
