Hundreds of people online couldn’t save him, but they can help his family say goodbye.

A crowdfunded campaign to pay for the funeral of Elijah Marsh has raised more than $80,000 in less than a day.

The 3-year-old boy died Thursday afternoon after wandering away from his North York home in the early hours of the icy morning. Surveillance footage showed the toddler — dressed only in a T-shirt, boots and a diaper — pushing open the door to his apartment complex and wandering out into the freezing air.

Once word of his disappearance got out, many local North York residents volunteered to find the boy, and thousands took to Twitter to spread the word and his photo online, using the hashtags #findelijah and #prayforelijah to express fear, love and, ultimately, heartbreak.

His body was found about 300 metres away from his grandmother’s apartment where he was staying. Paramedics and doctors tried to resuscitate him for hours, but failed to save his life.

Just hours after his death, an online campaign to raise money for his funeral surfaced on the . “Help cover the costs of Elijah Marsh’s funeral,” started by Toronto resident Justin Kozuch, raised $10,000 in the first eight hours since the boy’s death.

Kozuch said he started the campaign because he wanted to do more than talk about how sad he was for the family online — he wanted to do something.

“I have a 3-year old son,” Kozuch said.

“What happened to Elijah could have been my child, it could have been a friend’s child, it could have been anybody’s child and unfortunately it was somebody’s child.”

The goal was originally set at $20,000 but with money pouring in, Kozuch said he won’t set a limit. As of 10 a.m. Friday, the campaign had raised more than $60,000. Whatever money is raised by the Feb. 23, 5 p.m. deadline will go directly to the family, Kozuch said.

So far, about 1,600 people have donated. Tilt, for its part, has waived all credit card fees associated with donations. Kozuch wrote that he received this message: “We’ve waived all credit card fees going forward for your contributors. We’re rootin’ for you!”

Although he has not spoken to the family yet, he said he got their contact information Friday morning and will be calling them later in the afternoon.

How can a 3 year old open 3 doorknobs plus why and who put her boots on?.

The fund should appoint a trustee and the expense for the funeral should be paid.
The balance of the cash should go to the local Child and Family Services to promote the education of parents and grandparent, the child need to be watched.

The reason this occurred is someone was not doing their job.

Many 3 year olds are easily capable of doing what this child did, but I know my door would have been childproof-locked, and there's no way my kid or grandchild would have been able to leave without me waking up during the process.

My niece was opening doors at that age quite easily. She made a game of it and we all had to watch her like a hawk. Putting boots on is easy, tying them up is another thing.

That is smart. The family should only get enough for the funeral.
