Ont. man given $4.25m for wrongful conviction

An Ontario man who spent 12 years in prison for a sexual assault and murder he did not commit has been given $4.25 million for his wrongful conviction.
William Mullins-Johnson was convicted in 1994 in connection with the death of his niece.

The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., man was one of several people impacted by the work of now-discredited pathologist Dr. Charles Smith. Smith said the girl had shown signs of strangulation despite the child's history of vomiting in bed. ​

$4.25 for 12 years, fuck that was cheap, it appears from a review of the the list of wrongfully convicted that $250K per year is the going rate.

Since that is less than a judge's base salary it seems a little low, on the other hand there is a lot to be said for cash in hand and trying to recover ones life without thinking about a lawsuit for the next 5 to 10 years, and the fact that the lawyers will take any increase into their pocket (oooppps, that was impolite and should not have been said).
