Years ago I stopped buying orange juice. It's expensive and full of calories. I didn't think I missed it at all.

Then the beginning of the week I caught a cold/flu. It has been quite annoying and it's taken a lot out of me--I spent all day Monday in bed. Anyway, I got some orange juice in the house again and...

Holy crap that stuff is delicious! I'm on my second big bottle, and I'll probably buy a third soon! I didn't realize how much I was missing it.

Maybe the vitamin C is helping me get better and my body is craving it? Or it's just so sweet and delicious. Whatever helps I guess--I need to get my health back so I can return to my favourite hobby!

hope you're feeling better soon, where's OG so he can way in on the vitamin c question:) One possibility.... the juice made you feel better.. happier, our minds play an important role in healing our sick bodies, it may just have been the boost you needed:) just a thought

That's a thought Cristy. Even though the juice is not much of a replacement for the missing sex, it HAS made me happier just the same.

Apple juice would give you the same results.
I don't much care for apple juice though. Is it healthier?

I did a little research... not a whole lot of difference and depending on what you read/believe OJ seems to be a healthier choice and often a less caloric one. It is said that many apple juices also contain levels of arsenic

Both of America's most popular juices are delicious, low-calorie beverages with many nutrients and no fat. But if you're choosing, go for O.J. It's known as a vitamin C powerhouse and boasts almost twice the potassium of apple juice. It also contains about a quarter of the recommended daily allowance for folic acid, which lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke. Apple juice has a healthful amount of potassium and vitamin C but lacks folic acid.
Orange Juice
(8 ounces, unfortified)
112 calories
0 grams fat
496 milligrams potassium
124 milligrams vitamin C
74 micrograms folate

Apple Juice
(8 ounces, unfortified)
117 calories
0 grams fat
295 milligrams potassium
103 milligrams vitamn C
0 micrograms folate

OJ also goes well with Vodka or Tequila.

Apple Juice however ca hold up to Bacon infused Bourbon..........Just tossing that out there.

The amount of C in OJ and most other juices is not really that wonderful. A typical C supplement has 500 to 1000mg of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). A large glass of OJ has 120. So, you can drink four glasses of OJ or swallow a single pill to get the same amount of C. Linux Pauling believed megadoses of C extended life, prevented cancer, and does all sorts of wonderful stuff to your body. He won a Nobel Prize for his work. While the medical world is still out on the effects of megadoses (meaning 10g per day or more), when you are getting sick there's no harm in it, as any excess C is simply peed out of your body. The only negative effect C has even shown in controlled studies is that some people get ulcers (it is a mild acid, after all) in large doses.

Personally, I prefer Pineapple juice every morning. Sweeter than OJ and I like the taste better. I get the unconcentrated stuff. Also good is coconut juice, which has tons and tons of good stuff in it.

It probably would be even better just to eat the whole fruit and forget about the juice. It's been said, Pineapple when eaten with protein will help the body digest it more quickly. OG and Papa.....F, u, and your bacon, lovingly f u that is,:) lol, and OG I've gotten a higher resolution camera.......can I put it up your ass now:))

Pineapple can flatten your tummy, prevent stomach distention and help your body burn a few extra calories. Pineapple is a nutrient-rich fruit containing vitamin C, manganese, thiamine, copper, fiber and vitamin B-6. Additionally, pineapple contains one very important enzyme: bromelain, which is found in the stem and within the juice of a pineapple. This enzyme metabolizes protein, contributing to a number of health benefits, including a flatter abdomen.

I had a horrible cold a month ago, started craving OJ, drank a litre and felt better within a couple days.

Your body knows what it needs Bolt.

:)

I'm feeling about 90% better already. I don't know if it's the orange juice or not but I'd like to think it helped.

There are people at work who got this a week before I did that are STILL ailing. I feel very fortunate for my good general health.

Drinking fluids of any kind always helps, as will the natural vitamins and minerals in those fluids. And, if your mind wants to think OJ helped you out, then all the better. Half of all illness is psychological, according to the guys with couches...

No, not that kind of guy with a couch, Robin...

Agree with all of this. Vitamin C is water soluble, not lipid soluble, so any excess is not absorbed by the body, but instead eliminated through urine.
As for pineapple juice, I once heard a rumour that it makes certain bodily fluids taste sweeter. My understanding is also that red meats make those same bodily fluids taste bitter.
Hope you're feeling better Bolt. :)
