Dead teen linked Halifax Valentine's Day mass murder plot IDed

A young man and woman have been charged in an alleged plot to gun down shoppers at a Halifax mall on Valentine's Day and then kill themselves, Mounties said Saturday.

Lindsay Kantha Souvannarath, 23, from Geneva, Ill., and Randall "Randy" Steven Shepherd, 20, of Halifax, have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, Cpl. Angela Corscadden said in a statement.
Police arrested the pair early Friday at the Halifax International Airport.

"We do not wish to give these individuals further notoriety so will not be referring to their names again," she said.
On Thursday night, police found a third 19-year-old suspect dead in a Timberlea, N.S., home.
The Chronicle Herald identified the dead man as James Gamble.

A neighbour who didn't want to be identified told the newspaper she heard the gunshot and knew the man as he grew up playing with her son.
Both Shepherd and Gamble worked at Walmart and graduated from the same Halifax high school, according to their Facebook profiles.

Gamble's Tumblr blog contains a photo of him holding a rifle, Nazi imagery and pictures from the Columbine High School massacre.
Another post says, "February 14th is coming."
Earlier on Saturday, Justice Minister Peter MacKay told reporters the alleged plot "was not motivated by terrorism."

MacKay called the suspects "murderous misfits," and thanked law enforcement officers as well as a tipster for averting what "could've been a real tragedy."

Cops first responded to a weapons-related threat on Thursday morning.

They'd received information that a 19-year-old man from Timberlea, N.S., and a 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Ill., "had access to firearms and it was their intention to go to a public venue in the Halifax region ... with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves."

RCMP say a 17-year-old boy from Cole Harbour, N.S., was arrested in connection to the case, but released overnight without charge.

Halifax Shopping Centre officials said police notified them that the mall was a possible target for the alleged attack and they are co-operating with investigators.
