PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A teenager is recovering after police say he shot himself in the penis and testicle while cleaning a gun he just bought.
It happened Thursday morning at a home on the 200 block of Verada Street in Port St. Lucie.
Police say 18-year-old Michael Smeriglio first lied to police saying someone shot him while he was walking down the street. After being questioned by police he admitted to accidentally doing it himself.
Doctors say the bullet went through his penis, his left testicle and then lodged itself in his thigh.
Smeriglio told police he bought the gun last month at a party.
While police were investigating at the home where it happened, they discovered marijuana in the house. That led to the arrest of the homeowner Joseph Lamar James, 22, on drug charges.

Hmmmm..........Another candidate for the Darwin award I believe.

good for him
sounds like he illegally purchased the gun
it is clear he has no training

Shame he was not looking down the barrel instead of playing thug and putting it in his waist band.

I believe an 18 year old can legally purchase a handgun from a private party owner in Florida.

the lack of mentioning he is a licensed owner bothers me

Picture isn't showing on my computer, Bosco.
Here it is in case others aren't seeing it either.
I presume it's the semi-castrated genius in question.

The story didn't say he bought it from "a private party owner," Transient. The story says he bought it "at a party."

Safe to presume this wasn't your typical Tupperware party.

This is to differentiate between sales from a licensed firearms dealer and legal sales between private parties. Which could occur at a party or in a parking lot, or pretty much anywhere in the state.

and under State and Federal law he has to register it to his permit.

For ownership, you had stated he may have illegally purchased the handgun. From what I understand of Florida gun law, no license is required for ownership.

after some searching I stand corrected.

the only age restriction I can find is 21 or older for carry permit

The bigger question is whether or not he was successful in sterilizing himself so he wouldn't be able to pass off his common sense to future generations.

The lack of mentioning that he had the gun illegally pretty much solves it for me. He was arrested on drug charges and not illegal possession of a firearm. Just the type of guy that you want running around with a gun.

I do not know how many here have ever cleaned a gun but the first thing you do is make sure it is not loaded.

by doing so you will have opened the breach or the cylinder

Keep the breach or cylinder open during cleaning and you likely not going to shoot yourself while cleaning it.

Where can I take the test?
