It is the exception than the norm, because we still live in a monogamistic normative society. The author talks of how "obigate" poly folk have no more choice in the number of partners than homosexuals do in the gender of theirs. Still very few people have heard of polyamory, or the open relationship spectrum. To most, you're either single, pair-bonded, or cheating. Not realising there's a world of different ethical relationships to choose from.
