Just and FYI,

It is illegal for insurances in Ontario to offer people healthcare policies that cover medically necessary procedures and care already covered by OHIP.

If you don't believe me, check the law yourself. If you are still beyond stupid, ask yourself why Manulife or other insurance companies haven't offered these products if it is legal to do so.

They don't offer medical insurance policies for things like cancer surgery or heart surgery or anything similar because the law prevents them from doing so.

I never chose to have my Charter rights infringed, nor my NATURAL rights infringed. If people were given the option to purchase or not purchase private healthcare, then yes, they can be labeled as having chosen in this regard. But, if no private market is available, one doesn't choose in this sense.

My wife never chose Mao's government, nor did her grandfather who was jailed for not belonging to the Communist Party.

The people in Russia who are jailed for journalism didn't choose Putin.

Try changing government - it isn't easy.

Try getting the speeding limit increased from 50 km to 70 km and see how much work that takes.

Ask yourself why the insurance companies in Ontario don't offer medical insurance for cancer treatment in the province? Because the law prevents them from doing so. Disgusting laws written by scum human beings.

That's a stupid argument. Healthcare policies in Ontario cover "over and above" what is covered by OHIP. Why would any company offer (at a fee) what is already covered by the province?

I think papasmerf made a point. If you are not happy about the system, be proactive about it. If you have money and Canada health system is failing you, perhaps seek help elsewhere in USA or India or Thailand. It sucks and it is even worse for poor people.

Several studies, including by the UN, show the Canadian Health Care system is one of the best public-funded systems in the world. Sure there are issues, but it's a balanced system that does not favour rich over poor. Overall, it's absolutely the best system I've run into travelling and living around the world.

I do however agree with Oldguyzer and am happy I live in Canada and receive free health care. We still do have the option if finances allow it to head over to the USA or Thailand if we believe we could find better but reality is Canada does a pretty good job.

Why are there waiting lists? Two reasons: if there were none, we'd have an oversupply of doctors and specialists sitting around doing nothing, which is a total waste of their time and education; and waiting lists allow for prioritization, so urgent care gets handled quickly and less urgent gets to wait. Despite all the grumbling about waiting lists, urgent cases always get pushed through quickly. Those who complain are those who end up waiting because, quite frankly, their case is less important than others'.

It take 8 years or more in Unversity and practice to train a doctor. I spent 13 years in University to become a research oncologist. How would it be a good use of my time to have wasted time every day with nothing to do? Doctors want to do their craft, and stay busy doing it. We don't join this profession for the money, despite what others think. When I was working in the profession, I was capped in how much I could earn, and had to repay 13 years of University. In the end, someone who worked on the production lines at Ford made more, per hour, over their working life than I did.

As for shortages, like any business, there are boom and bust times. Doctors go where they are needed, and where they feel useful and appreciated, as well as paid properly. Shortages happen when none of those things line up, and doctors go to other countries to get better paid, better appreciated, or better treated. Just like anyone in another business would. However, in health care, you hear all the issues of shortages only when it becomes an issue, not when things are in a boom siutation.

Canada's health care is the best in the world. Not happy with it? Go somewhere else for your health care. You're allowed to, you know.

I've found that the wait times for specialists have about doubled in my lifetime. Same with the situation when being admitted to the emerge. It was suggested that I see a rheumatologist some years ago but after I received the referral I was told I would have to wait 13 months! I just went to Niagara Falls, New York and paid out of pocket. Waited all of 3 weeks to get in. The doctor couldn't believe I would go to him instead of taking advantage of our free health care. He was even more shocked when I told him of the wait time.

As a whole our system is a good one but feel it isn't nearly as good as it was 20 years ago or so. In those times I feel I got more qualified care and things moved so much faster. My GP is so jammed up he has about 10 minutes to spend with each patient he sees. When you are sick there is nothing worse than that feeling that you are being rushed. The other day he told me that they are pushing to use nurse practitioners more than GP's. It's a good way to save money I guess. But what does that say about the future quality of our health care.

Also the amount of treatments that OHIP covers seems to be diminishing as well. For instance Health Canada comes out and issues a statement saying how important it is to have adequate levels of vitamin D for optimal health yet we have to pay for the test. Another one is the cutting back on writing requisitions for colonoscopies. It seems as if this won't be done unless there is evidence of blood in the stool after a fecal occult blood test is done. Have to admit that I read this last one some time ago and am not completely versed on the complete picture. Maybe OG could help here.
