Just a huge fan of the whole Alien Franchise - except for AVP which I found to be pretty stupid.
I saw the original Alien on its opening night and let me assure you that it was the scariest movie I ever saw.

I really enjoyed it. Splurged and watched it on IMAX 3D. Blown away by the visuals. Several scenes where I had to look away but I feel like I totally got my money's worth.

I saw it yesterday and I agree with Silly Girl`s assessment. Great special effects, but the details just don`t add up.
Example.
A lady getting up and running a few minutes after having a C-section. This would never ever happen in real life. There were many more, but this one takes the prize.

This isn't a slice of life movie that should be realistic. It's sci-fi set in the future. The scene you mentioned was above and beyond tense and scary. If not for the other people in the theatre, I'd have been screeeaming. It was incredulous long before the surgery let alone after....when she was shooting herself up with what we are to assume incredibly powerful futuristic drugs. Noomi Rapace was fantastic in her role, but Michael Fassbender stole the movie with his portrayal of David. I can't wait to go see it again.

Duh the pod wasn't programmed to. It was revealing the real reason for the pod being there compared to the impression given at the beginning of the movie...further galvanized by the very next scene.

I really liked it and actually really thought it made sense. It actually also explained the beginning of Alien as well. Neat technology and the automated c-section was something gross and fascinating at the same time.
I know it's been a while, but I waited until it was released on dvd before seeing it....
for sg and her questions:
the first scene of the enigneer on earth explained the whole movie:
The engineer (for whatever reason) was meant to be terminated by that toxin that he drank. It was supposed to completely destroy every trace of him but a small section of DNA survived and flourished, through evolution, it became us (and every other living thing).
The "murder" ship was designed/created because like us, we can't just let things be, we have to meddle and since we weren't supposed to be, it was an accident, they were going to send the creatures to earth to destroy us.
The crew of the prometheus found the ship and thwarted the "launch" by ramming it.
The surviving alien was or turned out to be the mother of all the eggs laid in the initial alien movie. Now one question remains: the signal sent out to the nostromo in the first alien movie was deemed to be a warning to stay away......yet the only living thing on the planet was the "mother" alien....unless of course some other alien found the planet, got infected, initiated the warning beacon, and mayhem ensued.
As for the operation and the automated emergency pod.....I believe it was there for weyland, not vickers hence why it was only programmed for men......yeah, you'd think they'd be universal but hey, it isn't that important a point.....
As for her getting up and moving around, hell, women have been giving birth and going back to the fields to work long before technology came around (aka indians) so with the right drugs, she should be able to function and she was in dire straits from that point on.....not like she was 100% normal......
Anyhow, great movie, awesome special effects, and just the right amount of unknowns......if the alien weapons were what we're used to, it would have been too predetermined.....I was wondering all along how it tied into our familiar aliens until the very end...I thought I had misread the plot from the beginning since the "weapons" weren't our alien.........in other words, I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken lol......
