You need money and connections to get in. Just look at all the well-connected politicians and business men etc., whose children just so happen to be considered smart enough to attend the top schools.

Theo Speilberg - Yale University
Katia Washington - Yale University (Denzel washington's daughter)
Chelsea Clinton - Stanford University

Hell, look at famous people even after they graduate from the Ivy Schools. Hillary Clinton failed the bar exam during her first try and then was hired by the Rose Law firm who did business with her husband. Michelle Obama failed the bar exam the first time around as well, yet she was hired to several good career posts based on her 'academic qualifications'.
