The Reverend Harold Camping, who erroneously predicted the world would end on 21 May 2011, has revised his calculations and now expects the apocalypse to arrive this Friday.
Mr Camping has form in this matter. He first predicted the end of the world would occur in 1994. When this failed to happen, he blamed mathematical error.
Ahead of the 21 May 2011 prediction, Mr Camping and his followers spent over $100m worldwide to promote what they were sure would be the apocalypse.
Supporters of Camping's California-based religious groups called Family Radio had had expected a series of earthquakes to hit successive countries at 6pm on 21 May. This was to signal the start of The Rapture, in which millions of the Faithful would ascend to heaven before the Second Coming of Christ.
Instead, . Mr Camping insisted his words had been misunderstood, and that he had only meant an end to the world "spiritually, not physically".
