My father, who was born and raised in Mennonite farmland, had a wealth of Amish sayings, some of which still stick in my mind today.
Some he repeated for the sheer joy of German syntax in spoken English. For example:
• Throw papa down from the barn his handkerchief
• Throw the horse over the fence some hay
Others he repeated just for the common sense they embodied:
• No joy be complete lest it be shared.
• No man so wise he know everything, nor so stupid he know nothing
• Man who know everything still has much to learn
• Both rain and sunshine it takes to make the garden grow
• Those who have no children know best how to raise them
• Together go a narrow mind and a wide mouth
• Better to aim high and miss than aim at nothing and hit it
• To make your money last, first you must make your money
All these gems of truth were made quaint with Pennsylvania/Dutch pronuciation. This is the only one I can illustrate in print:
• Ve grow too schoon olt ... und too late schmart
Boy oh boy! Does that one ever sound familiar.:biggrin2:
Wazzup!
