A reporter and photographer, both in their 20s, have been killed after shots were fired during a live television broadcast in Virginia Wednesday morning.
Reporter Alison Parker and photographer Adam Ward of WDBJ-7 were killed while on assignment at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, Va., the station confirmed. Parker, the station’s morning reporter, was interviewing someone about attracting tourists to that part of Virginia.
“It is with extreme sadness that we report WDBJ7’s Alison Parker and Adam Ward were killed in an attack this morning,” WDBJ-7 said on Twitter.
“We are trying to figure out what just happened — thank you all for your concern and kind words,” the station tweeted.
The shooting took place around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, .
Local police were looking for a suspect who opened fire, the station said.
Parker is heard screaming and taking cover while the camera falls to the ground, the video shows. The broadcast then cuts back to the WDBJ-7 studio.
Ward was 27 and a graduate of Virginia Tech; Parker was 24 and a graduate of James Madison University, the station said. Both were from that part of Virginia, the station said.
Chris Hurst, an anchor on WDBJ-7, said he and Parker had recently moved in together. “We were together almost nine months. It was the best nine months of our lives. We wanted to get married. We just celebrated her 24th birthday,” he tweeted.
“She was the most radiant woman I ever met. And for some reason she loved me back. She loved her family, her parents and her brother,” Hurst wrote.
Parker and Ward worked together every day, Hurst said. “They were a team. I am heartbroken for his fiancée.”
“This is a horrific day for our @wdbj family and the community we serve,” station meteorologist Brent Watts said on Twitter.
The interview subject, Vicki Gardner, was hot in the back and is in surgery, The Roanoke Times reported.
The shooting is being investigated by the Franklin County sherrif’s department, with assistance from Bedford county officers.
Police haven’t yet issued a description of the killer.
Schools in Bedford County are under lockdown as police hunt for the shooter, according to ABC13.
Moneta is about 40 kilometres east of Roanoke.
