Do you Jet setter group of friends here ever think about retiring?. Do you have your set plan and goals. Do you know where you want to retire and would it be financially feasible for you?.

This conversation came on during a lunch get together with a group of friends and family members. I was shocked that only one has RRSP and other investments ready to set in when she retires.

I want to live in Colombia where my retirement return will give me 3 times the bang and also because they have the most beautiful women in the world :biggrin2:

For sure. I'm probably 25 years away from a reasonable retirement age, but I've been pretty good about maxing RRSPs, TSFAs and such. I've recently started thinking about what I want to do in my golden years (lol) and taken some steps to put those pieces in place so i'll at least have options later (e.g., retirement property, sources of income).

But the honest truth is...I don't think that I will really fully retire. I love my profession and I won't even reach my peak for another 15 or so years. God-willing, I'd like to work part time and pick and choose my work later.

Live for today as retirement is not guaranteed you will live than long.

I did that most of last year, and dipped into my savings and LOC a few times. Friggin sucked.

how many hockey players are here? Dude, we're in canada, it's CHEQUE by CHEQUE lol......

to be honest, I'll probably drop dead at work.....made too many employment moves over the years and have found that I only make enough to survive let alone save anything to retire on. In talking with others I've found I'm not the only one in this boat...most in my "class" are like me.....

I have also found that only those who are working for large corporations etc that have retirement packages and benefits that are actually able to put something away.....no other company I've worked for since I was laid off from Canadian Tire back in the '90s had any type of "package" let alone paid well enough so one could have a reasonable standard of living as well as sock something away.....

I have retirement set as far as funds, but as far was what I am going to do, I have no idea. My work is designed so that I don't really ever have to retire unless physically I can do my job anymore. Which I don't have to much of a demanding physical job that I can't work well in to my golden years if I like and I do like my job. My full time job. Not my part time gig with photography etc.

I would love to travel of course, but I do that now a lot anyway so I don't know if I will have many places left to see when I am older either.

I was meeting my FP the other day to review investments and such and figured I kind of don't need to keep putting away for retirement which is leaving me a bit stuck with what to do with my money now and I am only in my mid 30's. Kids school, already paid. My kids are teens. One lives at home, the other off to college. It has been drilled into my head since I was a wee lass to always prepare for your future. Mom was in fiance so couldn't escape it. My brother and I both. He is 30 and is almost finished paying off his first house, my nephew is just starting grade 1 but has his education completely covered for whatever school he wants to go to. my brothers retirement is taken care of as well. It is just the way we were raised.

I am shocked by the number of people who don't have a sounds financially invested future, a will and POA's.

As for living cheque to cheque - I could not imagine that. I honestly can't. I have never lived that way. I have been off work both full time and part time for 4 months to due a serious injury and I have not felt the difference money wise at all. Savings is a little lower but once I am back fully time at the end of the month that will be back in a matter of weeks. What do people do if this happens to them? And there is no insurance coverage like if the injury happened during a car accident or something? I just can not imagine living like that.
