He did not lose any and was able to come out clean. Yes he is fat, a jerk and clumsy but he has done what was asked from the taxpayers. Cleaned and got rid of the gravy train.

Well here it is. Not the video but accusations by the Toronto Star.

We were to come alone and park in front of the Royal Bank at a dingy plaza on Dixon Rd.

Our source would meet us there around 9:45 p.m. He promised to bring “his cousin” — a man he claimed hadsecretly recorded Toronto Mayor Rob Ford on video smoking crack cocaine.

This man, our source said, was a drug dealer who had recently sold crack to Ford.

This was May 3, more than a month after the source first contacted us and told us about the footage. That call came after the Star published a story about a stumbling, incoherent Ford being asked to leave the Garrison Ball in Toronto. That story also detailed concerns of people close to him that he had a substance abuse problem.

It was the Star’s third attempt to see the video. The dealer always seemed to get cold feet at the last minute. Our source promised that this time would be different.

We arrived early at the dimly lit strip mall. The parking lot was still pretty full despite the fact most of the shops seemed shut for the night. People wandered in and out of a variety store. A group gathered outside a restaurant, smoking.

We drank Tim Horton’s coffee and passed the time theorizing about what was going to happen, if anything.

Would they show us the video right there on the spot? Would we go into the nearby restaurant? Would it be a group of people? Just our source and the dealer? What if they asked us to get in the car and go somewhere? How could we ensure our safety?

At 10:30 p.m., with no source, we were becoming increasingly convinced that there was no video.

And then all of a sudden, a black car pulled up alongside ours. Robyn Doolittle’s cellphone rang. The source looked at us and motioned to the back of his car.

“Leave your cellphones. No bags. No purses. And get in,” he said.

Our source would drive us to the dealer. We were not to have anything that could record what we were about to see.

We got in the car. Doolittle sat in the front, Donovan in the back. The car was clean and new. Our source — who we’d been getting to know over the last four weeks — said he was involved because he wanted to help two young men in the drug trade. They needed money to start a new life, he said. They had a commodity, a video.

He said the price was “six figures,” which we loosely interpreted as at least $100,000. Later he told us their original price had been $1 million but he had convinced the dealers that was too much.

The Star wanted to see the video. Media organizations often pay $500 for a good picture shot by a freelancer, but this price was astronomical. We told him that and continued a negotiation that had already gone on for some time. On the drive to meet the dealer, talk again quickly turned to money. Earlier he told us that another unnamed media organization had offered $20,000, but that the dealers turned it down.

“We need to see it first,” Doolittle said. “Then we can determine what it is worth.”

“If there is a video,” Donovan said, “the people of Toronto need to see it.”

The Star did not pay any money related to the video. Discussions were ongoing as recently as last week as the Star tried to find a way to obtain the video.

The car headed down Dixon Rd. The ride was less than five minutes. We pulled into a huge parking lot alongside a series of highrise towers. In an earlier visit, the source claimed that people who sell Ford drugs live in the complex.

Our source scanned the lot for his “cousin” — who actually only seemed to be loosely related by blood. It was dark outside. Dozens of people were scattered in groups among the many cars. Our source phoned his contact. We’d driven past him.

Our source parked the car and said he’d go get him. He left with his keys in the engine — a good sign for our safety, we thought.

Several minutes later, our source returned.

“He’s coming.”

A few more minutes ticked by before a skinny man appearing to be in his early to mid 20s got in the back with Donovan. He was in dark clothing. He was breathing quickly. His eyes were wide.

We said a brief hello. This man didn’t want to talk. Until this point we did not know what to expect. A smartphone? Ipad? The man pulled out an iPhone. Donovan asked to hold it but the man said no. His eyes darted left to right, scanning the parking lot. Later we learned he thought we were cops and this was a setup. Eventually he relented and held the phone, with Donovan, who tilted it so we could both watch. The man hit play.

The video started to play mutely.

“No sound. Sound’s extra,” the dealer said.

We told him that without sound we could not verify the video.

We explained we needed to hear the sound to help us identify the man we were told was in the video. What he said was relevant to the story.

The dealer spoke to our source in Somali. The dealer eventually agreed to allow sound.

We watched it three times, freeze-framing from time to time and peering closely at the screen.

In the back of the car that night, we had absolutely no way to authenticate the video. What follows is an account of a video showing a man who appeared to be Mayor Rob Ford, to the best of our ability to identify him. He was sitting in a chair, speaking in an incoherent and rambling manner, smoking what looks exactly like a crack pipe.

Later, Ford’s lawyer, who has not seen the video, mused that it is impossible to tell from any video what a person is really doing. Callers to radio shows on Friday wondered if the video was a fake, doctored in some way. An ally of the mayor said videos can be altered and drug dealers can’t be trusted.

The dealer sitting beside Donovan confirmed he had shot the video and said it was Mayor Ford. The dealer appeared to be about 2.5 metres away from Ford.

The image was crystal clear. Prior to watching the video we had looked at numerous videos of Ford at council, on the campaign trail and at public events. The man in the chair was Ford, we concluded.

He was in the centre of the shot. The smartphone appeared to be filming from low.

At this point, we were expecting a poorly lit video at best, with blurry figures shot from a great distance.

That Friday night in the back of the car, when the video finally played we were shocked. The video was clear, lit by afternoon sunlight coming in through a partly shaded window.

In the video, filtered light bathes Ford’s face. Ford is mumbling and waving around on his chair. A man’s voice can be heard off to the left side. He talks to Ford about football. The voice tells him he should be coaching football because that’s what he’s good at.

Ford, slurring and moving slowly, bobs in agreement.

“Yeah, I take these kids … f---ing minorities,” and then he trails off.

He talks about “Everyone expects me to be right-wing, I’m supposed to be this great …” and again appears to lose his train of thought.

He moves the clear pipe to his mouth, flicks the lighter and moves it in a circular motion below the pipe and inhales. He exhales thin puffs of smoke.

The voice moves on to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau. The voice says he wants to shove his foot up the young leader’s “ass so far it comes out the other end.”

Ford: “Justin Trudeau’s a fag.”

Soon after this, a cellphone rings. It’s unclear if it is the phone that is being used to video the scene. Ford looks directly into the camera and says “that phone better not be on.”

The video then goes dark.

We replayed the video twice more, three times in total. We held the video within inches of our face to examine the glass pipe. It did not look like a tobacco or marijuana pipe.

“It’s crack,” the dealer said, growing more agitated and frustrated the longer he sat in the car.

“Are you worried, if this comes out, about your safety? Will the mayor know it’s you?” Doolittle asked.

“Money is safety.”

He left soon after and our source took us back to the Royal Bank, where we spent an hour digesting what we had just witnessed.
