I spent 1.5 hours on the phone today with Rogers, getting my internet and tv service straightened out.

I moved into this building almost 3 months ago and got Rogers internet. It was a promo deal that was only to last three months.

So, I did some research and discovered another provider that offered similar service at a somewhat lower price - Teksavvy.

I also did research for reviews on Teksavvy and found that recently their customer and tech service had gone down and there were many complaints.

So, I had no real intention of leaving Rogers, but I wanted some ammunition in dealing with them.

The opening voice mail menu gave me an option to "cancel my service" and that was the option I chose. I spoke to a fellow there and told him that I had discovered a cheaper cable internet provider, Teksavvy, and would have to cancel, because the three month promo was almost expired and i could not afford the higher rate.

I also mentioned that i might be interested in cable Tv and a home phone.

He said something about he wanted to see what he could do for me and put me on hold for a long time.

He came back and offered me the same service I was now receiving and a lower price than I was now paying! He also gave me a good price on basic Cable TV with free installation!

One of the charges on my bill was modem rental of $12 per month. I told him that I would rather buy a modem and avoid this charge. He offered to sell me the modem I was renting for about $250.00. Nice of him, huh?

I had researched the issue and found modems that might work with Rogers for under $100. The Motorola SB 1641 in particular which got great reviews.

So he transferred me to tech support to find out if this modem is compatible. That guy then transferred me on to "a fullfillment" department and he put me on hold for several minutes to find out if the modem is compatible. It is!

So I had that guy transfer me back to the original department to place the order and find out how to handle this modem switch.

Well of course I had to go through the whole process again, and finally got aggreement to the packages I wanted and the woman there then said that installation of the cable box would be $49.00.

I told her that the previous guy has said free installation, but she stuck to her guns and would not give in... so I told her to cancel my service and I would go elsewhere (total bluff on my part!).

She said "ok" and told me she was going to transfer me to a customer service agent to handle my cancellation. Then a few minutes later she came back, apologizing and said she had found a special deal where I would get a $50.00 credit in three months which would offset the installation fee.

I agreed and we finalized the deal in a friendly manner.

I believe that all through out this process Rogers acted in a devious manner, revealing "better deals" only when when threatened with loss of a customer. I was calm and polite through out the whole process, but it took me 1.5 hours on the phone just to get this settled.

Now, I'll have to watch my bills carefully to make sure they do what they agreed to do.

Rogers bah!

I went through the same process with Shaw when I moved in March, and I learned how to do what you did, from advice given on a review board too, lol. :biggrin2:

What a rip off, $250 for a modem.

Glad you stood your ground.

I can't stand Bell or Rogers. They treat you like shit but they are the only reliable game in Town. I started on Teksavy and let me tell you IF you have any issues that requires tech support you are basically on your own. The worst tech support ever. You can never speak to anyone who knows what to do and when you do you feel like they'be just googled the problem when you were on hold. You had to push them to the brink before they would act properly. It got so and I couldn't take it any more after one year. I got out and switched to Bell. I hate paying more but I need the internet for work and I can't run around fixing problems myself.

Yup, that's what I discovered when researching them.

Well, Rogers won.. they beat me...

I bought a cable modem to replace the rental one for which Rogers was charging me $12.00 per month. Then, while I had the cable TV installer here, I asked him to install it for me, and he phoned in to get the switch activated and they told him that they could do the switch , but that I would lose $28 per month of my discounts!

To get this resolved I would have to go to the Rogers store and threaten to cancel my account, and then I'm almost certain they would switch the modems with no penalty. But it all pisses me off. I've spent too much time on the phone dealing with Rogers and I give up. I'm keeping the Rogers modem, I'll continue to pay the $12 per month and I'll resent it.

The advantage to doing so, is that if there is a problem, they cannot blame the non-rogers equipment.

So, Rogers won, and its left a bad taste, but hopefully with coming reforms to the CRTC mandate there will be a change in how Rogers treats its customers.

I guess there is also an element here, of "Life is too short"... I've spent enough time battling with Rogers, and its no longer worth $12 a month to fight any longer. GGGRRRRRRRRR

Now, I'm gonna stop whining about it. I'm returning the cable modem I bought today, and I'm hopefully not going to have to phone Rogers again.

Sometimes it is best to spend a little bit more for reliable server. I remember going with a Wind stick because it was cheaper but did not work on half the locations I was going to, Roger's does.

I had an issue with Shaw Cable about 10 years ago, when I moved in with my brother for about 6 months. He didn't have internet, just cable tv, so he wanted internet now that I was moving in.

I already had a Shaw modem that I pur*****d and have had it for a couple years. When the Shaw technician came into install the internet, I noticed he had switched out my modem with a modem of his own. I didn't really think too much about it at the time, but when the next bill came, I noticed I had been charged for the new modem.

So I called them back pretty upset, and asked them why I was being charged for the modem, considering I bought the other modem. After some arguing over the phone, I got them to reverse the charges for the modem.

Another one, involved my phone. I got my phone bill in the mail one month, and noticed there were some charges on the bill that made no sense. Apparently *I* racked up over $400 dollars to calls to Nigeria. I'm like *what???*, I never made any calls to Nigeria, I don't know anyone there. After some back and forth, I got those charges reversed also.

You really do have to watch very closely to any bill that comes, because there could be some errors.

The advantage to Rogers is another great customer relationship set in cement, because after all ... "Happy Wife, Happy Life."

Really .... how else can you get fucked for as little as $12 a month in the comfort of your own home?

There was a great post yesterday about Steve Wonziak's four-hour customer service hell with AT&T. And that's The Woz! He could probably buy the damn company!
