I still find it interesting that it took him just as long to travel that last 15% or so with a parachute as it did to travel the other 85% from sub-orbit. He hit about 850 mph in less than a minute before he started to slow it back down to around 400 mph.

0 to 850 mph in about 58 seconds.

I know a guy did this type of high altitude free-fall at the beginning of the space race.

But does it count that he went faster than the speed of sound? Or does the altitude change the threshold of the sound barrier?
