to that I can attest, I have two, an 11lb'er and a 18lb'er, both have no fear. Prior to having these dogs I had a toy poodle-tiny little 6lb dog, that once took on a 250 lb mastiff, jumped up and grabbed it's lip and hung there for secs, lol, that mastiff didn't know what to do, and thankfully, it was a gentle dog

I think it's more about the position of the tail.

If it's up, he's friendly and willing to let you sniff his butt, if it's down, he's preventing you from sniffing his butt because he doesn't trust you.

My friends dog will wiggle it's tail at the site of strangers approaching but if you touch her she will try to chomp your hand off...

It's impossible to take her in public!
