Boil them? I wash them each carefully with Sunlight dish soap. For a whole wing, if you sprinkle Borax all over it and hang it to dry it will kill all the bugs.

I have quite a collection of feathers. There was a ranch on Hwy 33 east of Kelowna that had a flock of peacocks. I happened to come along early one morning to find the entire flock on the highway, so I herded them off and back down the hill. On my way back later that day, I stopped in to let them know I'd found them on the road, and ended up buying the entire tail fan of a recently deceased male bird. Took it home and put it in the bathtub to take it apart and wash the feathers - some of which were 7ft. long, and realized it was crawling with maggots!!!!!!! :don'twantto-see:/

Had to deal with it ... washed and dried all the feathers, then reassembled them onto a huge 6x8 piece of heavy black felt and made a spectacular wall hanging. Imagine trying to sew feathers that you can't actually handle ...

I have some smaller pieces of feather art that I've made too, like dream catchers.

One of the most disgusting tasks I've undertaken. Next to that would be the intact deer head I had given to me by a friend who knew I was collecting antlers. It was January, so I set it out on the deck for a few weeks until I found the courage to clean it up and now it hangs on my wall along with several others.
