No, I think its spot on. Prisons need to pay convicts at least minimum wage (or close to it).
And the work shouldnt be compulsory

Forcing someone to do work while not getting payed (or getting payed very little) is the definition of slavery

Might be reasonable if they pay for room, board and security.

Then room & board should be deducted from their minimum wage.

But to make prisoners work for nothing (or next to nothing) amounts to slavery IMO.
Especially when the prison makes a profit off their work

Lets say you went hobbying in Buffalo NY and you got caught in a police sting.
You then had to go to court and the judge sentenced you to 2 weeks in jail.
Would you be okay if for those 2 weeks you were made to work the chain gang by picking up trash from the highway and not getting paid for it??

You go to jail, you lose your rights. Rights to freedom, and rights to earn a wage.

Sorry but you can't charge inmates room and board. They are not there if their own free will.

I say make them work and don't pay them. Millions is paid into correction facilities and that money should be made up in other ways.
