Literally it means skeletal muscle rupture and can be life threatening if not treated immediately.

I bring this to your attention because a friend of mine's 14 year old son was rushed to the hospital in Florida having this condition.

I had first read about this about a year ago and in athletics this can be brought on through extreme stress being placed on your body.

My friends son is a standout athlete at his school and was doing a strength and conditioning workout at school which was supervised by his coach.

The workout consisted of a two hour training session non stop to muscular failure.

The outcome was the next day he was in the hospital suffering from dehydration and his arms were inflamed to twice there normal size. But even worse was the stress that his kidneys were under due to an insanely high CPK level of over 3000. The high range is usually around 175.

CPK is creatine phosphokinase, an enzyme found mainly in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. It is tested by taking a blood sample.
High CPK can indicate muscle destruction, heart attacks, central nervous system issues, and others. Long term exposure of high CPK can load up your kidneys, and may cause muscle loss and weakness.

If not for the quick thinking of a doctor in her area her son's kidneys would have possibly been damaged for life!

We are seeing this condition more and more with those that are trying Crossfit style training.https://www.huffingtonpost.com/eric-robertson/crossfit-rhabdomyolysis_b_3977598.html

So please if you or somebody you know is really pushing the limits of what your body can handle please take heed of this possibility.

Really the days of no pain no gain need to be examined and rethought.

1. Best wishes to your friend and their son in recovery.

2. We have learned about practising in extreme heat but it still goes on and as a coach I never subscribed to fatiguing athletes.

Our bodies really can only take so much.
