I was looking at the magic mushroom link and came to this story. Fascinating to say the least.

Keep in mind Obama Care does not address this.

What it does do is make it illegal to not have insurance.
A win for the the companies and hospitals

So if he didn't have insurance he would have to pay $55,000.

What logic is that?.

Insurance companies have negotiated rate with providers.

People do not.

Now you are seeing why I say Obama's health plan is a farce and only raises costs.

Glad to be Canadian and not having to worry about medical bills.

You said it! Many bitch about this country and the taxes, but get really sick once and it's all forgotten!

I should have listened to mami and study harder to become a doctor.

Unless you are waiting in line for a for knee replacement, or heart valve or even a simple CT scan. No system is perfect anymore.

This. I find it fascinating that insurers in every other major market I know of have put the screws to vendors (from auto body shops to lawyers) yet the medical industry barely gets an itch scratched.

Canada is slightly better because OHIP and public hospital funding is all done by ONE authority (MOHLTC). But, two tier healthcare is here and its getting expensive. I just booked an ECG to add on to my annual check up and they're hitting me for $295. WTF.

I find it is two tier depending on what province you are in. In BC, we have to pay premiums, if your employer doesn't provide this as a perk of the job, then you foot the bill yourself. If you are low income, and do your taxes, you can qualify for it to be premium free, but if not you would pay as a single person a max of about $70 per month I think. Obviously higher if you are covering a family.

otherwise you are not covered, and would get a bill for services, from the doctor appointment (usually $80 bucks per visit) and lab work (they will send you a bill.) the rates are not super high for those things, but if you could afford the $70 a month, then you'd be covered for these costs. However,, if you rarely see a doctor, are you going to want to spend more on insurance than if you simply only went a couple of times max a year at 80 per visit? Doing the math that is?

And it is mandatory, so people while they have to wait to get coverage if they move to the province from anywhere else, still have to pay into it regardless.
