Specialized Eyeglasses Make Cancer Glow Blue for Surgeons

A new prototype eyewear makes cancerous cells illuminate blue while looking through the lenses. The yet-unnamed device was developed by a team led by Samuel Achilefu of Washington University and was used on a human cancer patient for the first time just yesterday.

Depending on the type and location of the cancer, surgery can be a common first course of action to remove the diseased cells from the body. The surgeon must be careful not to cut away too much healthy tissue while at the same time getting all of the cancerous cells. As the cancerous cells are very small and can even be hard to distinguish under a microscope, surgeons need all the help they can get in properly identifying the cancer cells so they can be properly removed from the patient. If cells are left behind, the cancer will resurge and require additional surgery or more aggressive treatments.


The eyeglasses build upon previous research from Achilefu of a novel technique coined optical projection of acquired luminescence (OPAL). Molecular markers are introduced to the area slated for surgery and a video system detects and displays the luminescent cancer cells. The results of this study involving surgery in mice were published in October in the and seemed to be quite promising.

The system is able to detect tumors with a diameter of 1 mm, which will reduce the amount of healthy tissue extracted during surgery. Going forward into human patients, a different biomarker will be used which will cause the tumor to glow blue on the screen.


On February 10, the glasses were put to the ultimate test as Dr. Julie Margenthaler used them to operate on a patient with breast cancer. After the surgery, she acknowledged that the technology is still in its infancy, but is “encouraged” by the potential, noting that it could reduce or even eliminate followup surgeries. While in use, the blue isn’t uniform; the shade indicates the concentration of cancer cells.

Light blue patches are densely packed with cancer while darker regions have fewer diseased cells. The glasses will be used again later this month on a patient with melanoma.

why not add something into the injection that kills only the marked cells?

If only it would be so easy. I am sure in a matter of a few years they just may be able to do that.
 
I believe there already is a cure for basically everything but there's too much money and too many jobs at stake.

They cannot be so cruel. What if one of their relatives has cancer, how would they feel?. Don't you think they would do anything in their power to release the findings?.

Nope, there's too much $ involved! It is also a means to curbing the population!
 
There is not "one" type of cancer, but hundreds of different types. Which is why there will never be "one" treatment or cure.
There is however extremely high success and recovery rates with certain types of cancer.

I am just a lay person, maybe oldguyzer could comment on this statement.

I totally agree with you and I hope it's soon. This horrible disease has affect far too many people. I don't believe anyone is withholding the cure. As someone else mentioned everyone is affected by it and the secret would get out.
 
Not really a case of withholding the cure, Baz.

More a case of not looking for it.

Simple economics.

Most medical/scientific research is funded by big pharmaceuticals. If they find a drug to treat the symptoms, they can keep extracting dollars from your pockets (or the health care system) while prolonging your misery indefinitely. That's a glorious scenario for shareholders.

If they find a cure, and you don't need spend your budget on their drugs anymore .... where's the ongoing profit in that?

"Cancer" is not a single disease. Cancer is any mutated cell. We all have cancerous cells in our body, as all cells have a chance of mutation when they divide. Very few of those mutated cells then divide further, so that mutation dies out ending that line of mutations. However, some cell mutations do continue to divide, and then the cell accumulation grows. We tend to call that a tumour. Sometimes, those cells are harmful due to the mutation, and begin to kill healthy normal cells, destroying the regular function of those cells in whatever organ they are in. That's what we deem as invasive, harmful diseases, but we tag all those mutated cell issues with the generic term "cancer".

Will we ever "cure cancer"? No...we can't stop cells from dividing (we'd die) and mutating (that's nature to blame). Can we cure specific types of mutations (cancers)? Absolutely, and we are making magnificent progress on doing exactly that.

Opalescence for cell mutation detection has been available for a while, but it doesn't work on all cells, and it does require a clear view of the cells (you can't see through the human body to detect them, for example). This research builds on the work of many others over several decades. It's hopeful, and with time will prove to be a great diagnostic tool, allowing oncologists to actually "see" where the mutated cells are, which then leads to treatments.

As for your last line, that's something researchers (myself included) have been working on for decades. If we can find a cancerous cell, why can't we target it with something that will kill it? Something a lot more specific than the broad-spectrum "kill everything" approach we have with chemo now. And, slowly, we're getting there. Obviously, it's not simple: this is a highly complex science, but we will get there.

I am one of the first to blame big pharma for suppressing some innovations and lines of research. I have personal experience that indicates money is the most important thing to some companies. However, science and the people who do it would not let something as earthshaking as a "cure" be buried. I do have faith in my fellow scientists to care more for the human being than for the dollar bills.

Our treatment rate of some cancers, such as breast and prostate, is nearly 100% WHEN CAUGHT EARLY ENOUGH. That's the key, folks: get tested. Regularly. Forget the ongoing media debate about mammograms and prostate checks being a waste of time: they are not. I've seen waaaaay too many cancerous growths detected early because of both those things, and removed successfully. Caught early enough, most of the major cancers (breast, prostate, lung, skin, etc) can be treated, managed, or cured. There are some cancers that are impossible to treat with a high degree of success right now, but they are being studied and time will find solutions, too.

I doubt there ever will be "one" solution, because cancer is not one disease, but I do believe we'll be able to manage ALL cancers very soon, as long as they are caught early.

Get tested, boys and girls. Your life depends on it. Listen to the doctors, not the media hype. No testing is a waste of time. Ever.

Of more concern to me...I just tried those new glasses and every damn cell looks like a Smerf! And there's this big one....<shudder>
