Stephen Hawking is to feature on Pink Floyd’s new album The Endless River.

The 72-year-old physicist’s voice is sampled on a track called “Talkin’ Hawkin’”, which uses his synthesised voice from a 1994 British Telecom advert.

The song is not intended as a sequel to Pink Floyd’s 1994 track “Keep Talking”, which also samples Hawking from the same commercial.

Guitarist David Gilmour said he originally chose to use Hawking in “Keep Talking” after the advert brought him close to tears.

“I don’t think he even wrote the words that they used with him, but…he was in it, in his wheelchair,” he said in a radio interview in 1994.

“He looks kind of strange. And I just found it so moving that I felt that I had to try and do something with it, or with him or something, in some way.”

The Endless River also includes 12 tracks written or co-written by the late Richard Wright, many of which were drawn from sessions recorded with Wright in 1993. The band has confirmed that it will be the last music they release.

Stephen Hawking hails 'life changing' speech upgrade

Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking can communicate with the world faster and easier thanks to new technology from Intel Corp and SwiftKey which replaces the decades-old platform that made his computerized voice recognizable around the world.

Hawking, the author of best-seller "A Brief History of Time", has a form of motor neuron disease that has left him almost entirely paralyzed and dependent on a computer to speak and write.

"My old system was more than 20 years' old and I was finding it very difficult to continue to communicate effectively and to do the things I love to do," he told reporters on Wednesday. "With the improvements made I am now able to write much faster and it means I can continue to give lectures, write papers and books, and meet with my family and friends more easily. This new system is life-changing for me and I hope it will serve me well for the next 20 years."

Intel said it had been working on the new platform, called ACAT (Assistive Context Aware Toolkit), in collaboration with Hawking for three years.

The new system, which is controlled by an infrared switch mounted on Hawking's glasses, has doubled his speech rates and sped up common tasks, such as finding a computer file, by about 10 times, Intel Labs engineer Lama Nachman said. It uses predictive text algorithms developed with six-year-old British software company SwiftKey, similar to those found on smartphones, to select words after inputting just 10-15 percent of letters, significantly reducing the effort and time required.

The software will be made public early next year so it can be used to help other people with motor neuron diseases, quadriplegia and other disabilities. "By making this technology freely available it has the potential to greatly improve the lives of disabled people all over the world," Hawking said.

One element has not been updated, however. Hawking, who has spent much of his career at Cambridge University, specified that his distinctive computerized voice, complete with North American accent, should not be changed.

Stephen Hawking is again warning about announcing our presence to any alien civilizations that might be out there, especially those that could be more technologically advanced.

In his new half-hour program "Stephen Hawking's Favorite Places" on science-themed subscription service CuriosityStream, the world's most famous theoretical physicist flies by the potentially habitable exoplanet Gliese 832c in a CGI spaceship as part of his hypothetical dream itinerary for a tour of the universe.

The super-Earth is only 16 light-years away and just the sort of world the Hawking-supported Breakthrough: Listen initiative hopes to scan for signs of alien signals using our most sensitive radio telescopes.

"If intelligent life has evolved (on Gliese 832c), we should be able to hear it," he says while hovering over the exoplanet in the animated "U.S.S. Hawking." "One day we might receive a signal from a planet like this, but we should be wary of answering back.

Meeting an advanced civilization could be like Native Americans encountering Columbus. That didn't turn out so well."

It's a sentiment Hawking has expressed before. In fact, he's even used the same metaphor in other television programs over the years.


Hawking manages to be both worried about exposing our civilization to aliens and excited about finding them. He supports not only Breakthrough: Listen, but alsoBreakthrough: Starshot, another initiative that aims to send tiny nanocraft to our closest neighboring star system, which was recently found to have an Earth-like planet.

Not everyone agrees with Hawking that we should try to keep ourselves hidden from potential extra-terrestrial conquering races. Doug Vakoch, president of METI International, which is dedicated to researching, composing and sending messages from Earth to potential alien civilizations, explained on a recent CraveCast that we've already revealed ourselves through the myriad radio, television and other signals we've been sending out for nearly a century.

Ultimately, though, the argument over whether to reach out to E.T. could be a moot point, if, as some believe, aliens have already been in touch and visiting Earth for centuries.

China begins operating world's largest radio telescope

The world’s largest radio telescope began operating in southwestern China Sunday, a project which Beijing says will help humanity search for alien life. The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope, nestled between hills in the mountainous region of Guizhou, began working around noon, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Researchers quoted said FAST would search for gravitational waves, detect radio emissions from stars and galaxies and listen for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial life. Earlier Xinhua cited Wu Xiangping, director-general of the Chinese Astronomical Society, as saying that the telescope’s high degree of sensitivity “will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the galaxy.”
