On Nov. 19 at approximately 6 p.m., we became aware that one of our employees had posted an offensive, inappropriate photograph on her personal Facebook page. The photo was taken at a national historic site in October by a fellow employee during a trip to Washington, D.C. attended by 40 residents and eight staff. The photo has since been removed from Facebook, and both employees have been placed o...n unpaid leave pending the results of an internal investigation.

This photograph in no way reflects the opinions or values of the LIFE organization, which holds our nation’s veterans in the highest regard. We are proud to have veterans serving on our staff and board of trustees, and we value their service. The men and women who have selflessly fought and sacrificed their lives to protect the rights and lives of Americans deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. We are acutely aware that this photo has done a disservice to veterans and we are deeply saddened that it was taken and shared in a public medium.

Obviously she did not do well in history class or man-in-society! Ignorant and stupid people unfortunately will always be part of society. She probably would do the same sort of nonsense at the 9/11 memorial.

It appears that she is (soon to be was) an employee of some sort of home, and there are always contracts and code of conduct/ethics to follow which she breached. President Obama here is another (soon to be unemployed American) maybe you should make her Ambassador to Syria and let the cards fall wherever.

As repulsive as it might seem wtf has happened to freedom of speech. It is one of our rights our veterans died for. Is she not entitled to her opinions or in this case a stupid disrespectful gag pic without being fired and basically ripped apart in our booming social communities? I agree it's distasteful and she comes off looking like trailer trash but does she deserve to lose her job because of public pressure, especially if the CEO took the picture??

You raise a good point, Robin. Freedom of speech is one of the things veterans died for. And she is not being denied that freedom. There is no indication that she is being thrown in jail, for example, and tortured for expressing her beliefs.

As for being fired . . . well, as Bosco notes:

I think you're bang on about the employer's rights, Bosco.

However, I suggest the firing doesn't reflect an institution being "off limits"; rather it responds to her very public display of bad judgement which raises questions about whether she demonstrates good decision making on the job.

I certainly wouldn't want her on my team, nor the person who took the photo.

I say that is a good thing. Who would want to hire a person that doesn't respect.

I've fired a staff member of mine for idiotic comments made on the net. I mean how many times do I need to hear that person bragging at wasting time at work and winning tickets to events before I start paying attention to their actual work.
