When you were a child-

Did you ever aim a flash light beam up into the dark night sky and observed how the light beam traveled farther than you thought it would?

Do you think our cell phone calls are leaking past the satellites?

(Science Fiction always posed the question if our TV programs were leaking into space.)

No but I jumped up and down on my etch-a-sketch to see what was inside. Made a horrible mess

What was inside the etch-a-sketch?. Liquid or powder?.

As of late stray thoughts have kept me from sleeping, and with sudden pangs of sadness and tears.

And sometimes the thoughts aren't that "stray" . :(

Bud, SH. Forget the yesterdays. Live today, if all else fails then look forward for tomorrow. Life is too short to dwell..

regarding the tv transmissions "leaking" into space. Of course they do. They aren't directional in nature therefore any signal transmitted will continue unabated in space indefinitely.

With radio and tv transmissions the term "receive" the signal isn't entirely accurate. You're not actually receiving it, you're simply listening in on it. It continues whether you have your radio on or not.

My only question would be about signal strength and how atmosphere or lack there of would affect the signal. Does our atmosphere inhibit the transmission thereby limiting the range of the transmitter? If so, would even a weak transmission travel easily through the vacuum of space?

Now there are sites that suggest that radio waves travel at or near the speed of light therefore unless they are affected by external forces (solar flares, interference etc) they should travel indefinitely (as shown in the opening sequence of the movie "contact" with Jodie Foster)

On long drives when I was a kid I would watch the trees fly by and on a whim catch hold of one with my sight. Seek to find one individual leaf on it, and focus clearly on that leaf. I would satisfy myself with the fact that I may be the only person ever to fully see that one leaf.

Only now, years later, do I realize that this fact alone means nothing to that leaf.

I always knew you leaf fans were a bit nuts
