Another year, another round of the Mensch Awards (a.k.a. “The Menschies”), The Grid’s annual collection of rad folks who rocked the city, both downtown and the ’burbs, over the past 12 months. In Yiddish, mensch means “a person of integrity or honour”—basically, a good egg. Our 2013 nominees not only showed some stellar character traits, but did so in a year when the city needed a serious boost.
This year’s list includes a daring photographer, a voice of reason at the TTC, a hip-hop wunderkind, and one enthusiastic Blue Jay. As in previous years, The Grid’s readers will decide who is the menschiest of all. [FONT=PragmaticaMedium-Reg !important]All you have to do is vote for the Mensch of the Year . The online poll closes at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5, and the winner will be announced in our Jan. 9 issue.

Everyone loves a comeback tale, especially a heart wrencher that involves an animal. Such is the case for Toronto Police Constable Gregg John and his horse: Following a traumatic slip and fall (and near run-in with a tractor trailer) while on duty on Dufferin Street, the aptly named Trooper, a 10-year-old Percheron-Hackney cross, seemed spooked.
Some TPS officers suggested retirement, but Const. John, recognizing the Seabiscuit-esque potential of his companion, worked tirelessly to reacclimatize Trooper to the hustle and bustle of T.O. His efforts paid off. In October, the pair became the first in 30 years to win every single category—including a daunting obstacle course—at the North American Police Equestrian Championships in Richmond, Virginia. Ah, the indomitable equine spirit.
