Wichita firefighter were cleaning up what they thought was an unsuccessful dog rescue when one of the firefighters spotted the animal's nose on April 12, 2012, in Wichita, Kansas. After 2 and half hours of searching and cutting through concrete, firefighters found the dog safe and sound.

Brave black Lab stays beside fallen friend in busy traffic

A dog's loyalty is a treasured thing, but sometimes it can be heartbreaking, too. Such was the case with the 2-year-old black Labrador in La Puente, Calif., who the side of a canine friend who had been struck and killed by a passing car. Another motorist put down traffic cones on Hacienda Boulevard to protect the guard dog until animal control officials could attend to her. Now Grace, as they're calling her, is at a shelter, awaiting a claim from her owner or possibly adoption by a new family -- who will get a companion as brave and true as they come.

That is so sad. I don't own a dog but will think about it.
