What drives our desire to behave morally?
Neuroeconomist Paul Zak shows why he believes oxytocin (pronounced oxy-toe-sin) is responsible for trust, empathy and other feelings that help build a stable society.
Oxytocin levels are increased by massage, dancing and sex. Apparently praying works too, as do happy events, like wedding parties. However, oxytocin production is inhibited by improper nurturing. Psychopaths do not produce oxytocin. Those with low levels of oxytocin include about half of sexually abused women, people with high levels of stress, and guys with high levels of testosterone.
Good news: it is released by BOTH genders during sex and by women who are breastfeeding. And if you stay tuned to the final moments, you'll discover peace helps generate oxytocin.
