Gun manufacturers are in financial trouble. Remington not too long ago had to file for bankruptcy protection. Add that with the increased scrutiny of Russian and other foreign monies filling NRA pockets. Also, given the fact NY has banned the NRA, they are feeling the heat, and rightfully so.
It's hard for me to believe they would simply not exist anymore. They very well could be trying to manipulate the public and trying to gain sympathy for their fight with NY.
They need to be replaced with a real gun advocacy group for responsible gun owners. But gun nuts are so brainwashed, the NRA would have them thinking that any other orginization would be some liberal kind of bullshit, created by the jews, with a hidden agenda to ban guns.
The NRA was about gun safety. They used to sell yellow tinted safety glasses, and shooting gloves. They held classes on firearm safety. This was back in the day when everyone had rifles. Back then, anyone who had a handgun was in law enforcement, was the victim of a violent crime, or fucking odd.
Somewhere along the line the NRA became politicized, and started to care less about firearm safety and more about making sure every house had an assault rifle.
