The Should Read, Must Read Thread

More than 200 people are reported as victims of family violence every day in Canada, according to a new report by the chief public health officer.
Family violence was the focus of the “State of Public Health in Canada report,” which was published Friday.

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Gregory Taylor told CTV News the statistics were “staggering.” In 2014 alone, the number of women or girls who have reported sexual, physical or verbal abuse would have filled Edmonton’s 60,000-seat football stadium.

“It looks like that is just the tip of the iceberg,” he said, adding that cases of family violence are under-reported often because victims are too afraid or embarrassed to speak out.

According to the report, data showed that 230 Canadians are reported as victims of family violence each day. It also found that family violence was more likely to affect Canadians “who are more vulnerable, marginalized or facing inequities.”

Always has been and will remain that way unless we get rid of the bulls. TOO HARD TO DO BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BE POLITICALLY CORRECT BEFORE A JUDGE.

A sad fact of humanity, especially and often times more within poorer families. Poverty brings stress, stress brings rage, sometimes:(

Maybe a sad fact of humanity,
The reality is, for the most part, that people choose who they want to be with. By the time it gets reported, the woman should have known the direction that the relationship is going. I understand that there may be financial constraints that make it had to leave but once a woman has accepted the aggression, it is no longer a partnership in life.
The male should also realize that his choice was the wrong one too and there is someone else out there that he would not exhibit that behaviour.

I can tell you from personal experience that some of my previous relationships, although I never hit a woman, at times I was extremely aggressive. With my wife of twenty years, she has never once seen me be aggressive with her although I must admit there has been a time or two she looked like she wanted to hit me but those time I really deserved it.

This statement almost infers that the abused, those who've stayed, get what they deserve? We do pick our partners, and sometimes they pick us and often times in the beginning of a relationship, people hide their true selves, their real personalities and abusive ways. Sometimes it takes years for the first signs of abuse to happen, to be evident and many of those who abuse are masters of manipulation, manipulating their partner into staying. We should never point the finger at any abused victim and say you should have , you could have, etc, unless you were there and know the whole story, even then, it's not fair to. I'm sure you know, that once a relationship begins, many things factor into why people continue on into it even with lots of negativity and reason/s to leave.

Abuse is not easy to understand, nor are abusive relationships. Leaving one is also not easy and many people don't understand why the abused often stay and even protect their abusers. Psychiatrists and psychologists are who should and could explain this. But to blame ones aggression, or aggressive behavior on another isn't right either. Certainly some people can push our buttons more than others, but regardless, it is up to you to have constraint, it is up to you to control yourself and to know right from wrong. I'd question myself before I'd point to another as a reason for my aggression, it's either within your personality to be so or it isn't, not because of the actions of another. But that's just how I see it.

In a population of 35 million or so. These numbers are staggering.

  • Nine million Canadians have reported experiencing abuse before age 15

By that I mean by the time you get your first black eye, more than likely you have made the choice to continue. It isn't about blame or pointing fingers, it is realizing oil and gas don't mix.

Do you not get the sense that Rihanna knew that chris brown was agressive to her?
She went back to him.
At some point you got to say, that wasn't the smartest move.It says as much about her as it does him. I would venture a guess that most abusive relationships are like this, in my opinion.

I guess you missed my point, and you are pointing blame to the victim.I can't comment to what Rhianna knew or didn't know about Chris Brown, since I don't know either of them:)

No I understand.
My wife has a friend, she was being abused, the short of it, the guys sugar level was off and it was the cause.

You do know about rihanna, she went back to him after she got beaten.
They didn't have children.
She didn't have any financial concerns
No. She stayed because she thought she loved him.

It isn't to just say that the guy shouldn't be abusive, I would hope we are way past that, maybe the women should try to help herself out too. By society saying that people should not be abusive to each other doesn't mean that you should stay in an abusive relationship because that person will change.

First of all...................Abuse knows no Race, Gender, Religion, Educational or Economic Barrier.

The concept of men are abusers and women are victims is total BS.
The same goes for the horse shit that being poor leads to violent tendencies.

As to why people stay with their abusers?
Wake up most are kids and they are being abused by family members or people trusted by the family.

As for why do adults stay with abusers?

They feel this is what they deserve....They often see abuse as attention and that is always good to get.

Yea they need help...not just help in getting out of those relationships but help with finding the good inside themselves.

Why does on parent allow abuse of the kids?
That is because they are enabling the abuse and those kids need to be placed were they will know love does not cause pain or broken bones.

If you are in an abusive relationship...............Leave.
